The creators of this product claim that it will keep your Christmas tree stand filled with water until the tree has consumed nearly I've worked it out! Due to the fact that I ordered this after my tree was up, it wasn't as easy to set up as it would have been if I had set it up initially. I tested the system by mixing water directly in a glass to get a sense of how it works and it works I then set it up with my tree (with the help of an Amazon Answers response) so that the gallon jug is about 3/4 full when filled. As I have a tree stand with an adjustable tilt, I need to elevate the jug a bit to keep it upright. If the water level in your tree stand is higher than the water in the jug, the jug will not empty fully (and your tree stand will dry up), so the siphon keeps the water level in the tree stand level with the water in the jug. It is the right jug for the job, I made a mark on it last night at the water line and saw that the water level had decreased overnight. That's what I like about it. There is a shiny paper gift bag inside which you can put the jug of water. While that would be fine, it would be amazing if it came with a hard plastic Christmas styled tote bag because when I fill the jug, some drips of water run down and get on the I got a bag in a vivid red color. Suppose a few drops were to spill down into the bag and bleed onto the wood beneath? I don't know? It is, however, something I am very careful about. It has been one year since I planted my tree. We have been using it for 5 weeks and it is I find it so much easier than crawling under a tree, sticking my finger in to see if there's water, getting poked by branches, and then spilling water everywhere when I try to fill it up. The tree was quite large, and we had difficulty getting beneath it to fill the treestand. Since it needed to be refilled frequently, it was quite tricky to get underneath.
