I found the cage to be lined with velvet. In the event that you accidentally touch it, you will not get burned. Touching it all the time is normal for me.
This product is meant to replace the old heater in the Kotatsu frame of the standard model. Screws from existing hardware can be used to replace the new one.
It is possible to use the plug in the United States. Although the voltage is different, I recommend getting a converter as well, since the voltages are different. Over five years ago, I purchased this unit and converter. I have never had a problem with them.

As my boyfriend and I knew we wanted a kotatsu in our apartment, we decided to purchase a Hemnes coffee table from Ikea (we didn't like the Lack, but the Hemnes was the perfect height) and I purchased the heater and This bad boy was mounted to the underside of the table with some L brackets and 1" screws I picked up from Lowes. It had a green comforter to put on top of it and the bottom shelf was used for the top shelf! Currently, I am all toasty and stuff in the middle of this review. The only drawback is that the heater clicks every now and then, causing the lights to brighten/dim slightly, probably due to the conversion of electricity. The instructions are in Japanese of course, but easy to follow. Now I'm going to make my cushions and never leave again.
The thing is cool as hell! That is a really interesting concept. I don't know why it isn't more popular here in the U. S. As of last year, I have built my own kotatsu, and have been truly satisfied with it. The only thing you can really notice is a very slight vibration/hum. Though all the instructions are in Japanese (which I can't read), the pictures and diagrams are accurate so I was able to put it together quite easily. My computer is set at the lowest setting, but I don't notice the metal getting hot at all. My initial fear was that hitting it with my foot would cause injury, but after a few days I feel more secure knowing I won't be It also seems like the cord is quite heavy duty. I am very happy with the result. The temperature is warm.
In the short time since I have had this heating element, it has worked well. As Winter sets in in New England, we built a Kotatsu table. The heating element has been used nearly every night since it was built. As I have been monitoring the kwh power consumption I have used I have seen that we spend about $0. 01 on our Watt monitor. I would estimate that we're spending at most 25USD per day when we run the Kotatsu for about 5 hours. In the meantime, we have been able to leave the heat off in the rest of the house and have saved quite a bit of money in that regard. As I said, you have to buy a step down converter if you live in the US, else you will send too much voltage to the heating element and risk fires and heating element failures.
My favorite thing about this fan is how quiet it is. The price is a bit high, but the product works well. The room is nice and quiet. The fan makes a lot of noise however, we can adjust the temperature. It works great! Because American voltage is slightly higher than European voltage, by the time it gets into the house the voltage is already decreased. My father in law is an electrician and told me we didn't even need a converter. Our power supply came directly from the wall, so we plugged it directly in.
This worked well as my bottom table top (just a piece of plywood) was screwed into it, and then I laid the comforter on top, before I topped it all off with the last "real" table top. It was a hard decision, but it was definitely hard for me to wake up and continue talking on the phone under it the first time. I messed up. Even though all the reviews warned that it required an external power converter, I tried it without one, and it worked just.
There is something to be said for the size of the room, but it's not a big deal. The table is attached to a Hemnes table from Ikea using 40 mm L-tubes Screws and brackets are 16mm in diameter. I'm not sure if it was necessary to leave a small gap between the table and heater. You can keep your hands warm beneath the kotatsu, but it won't get too hot. The US converter you are using for the US does not work. It has been a month since you purchased yours and that worked out for the best The product is used regularly.
A kotatsu heater is one of the best things I've ever bought! Installing a heater on the underside of an Ikea table was easy using an instructables. I connected the power to the heater through a transformer box (step up/down 500 Watt Japan 100 or 120 Volt) and covered the table in a king-sized blanket During the cold winters in Boston, I love this quilt. It keeps me and my cats warm.
The mild heat is pleasant to me. I like how not too hot it is and how quiet the fan is. In additional to purchasing the step down on Amazon, I purchased a plug for it as part of the "buy with" recommendation. The conversion converter was returned to Amazon in a timely manner.
