Questions & Answers

Is there any mounting hardware required?

The mantel comes with all of the necessary hardware. We also mounted the mantel into wall studs with some very strong 4 inch screws so it could hold heavy glass decor.

What is the maximum amount of weight it can bear?

When properly installed, these mantels can support up to but not more than 25 pounds. The mounting board should be screwed to as many studs as possible, and "Liquid Nail" adhesive should be applied between the mounting board and the wall for proper installation. This aids in weight distribution. If studs are not available, use molly bolts spaced every 12" along the length of the mounting board, and attach the shelf to the mounting board with finishing screws or finishing nails every 12". 18" and "Liquid Nail" adhesive all the way across the top of the mounting boards

What is the width of the mantle's bottom?

The 60" mantel has a 52-inch bottom width. 1/2" in width and 4" in depth.

I'm curious as to how much weight this can hold. I'd like to put it above the fireplace with my TV on the mantel. I'm not sure if it'll fit my small television. ?

The mantel is sturdy enough on its own. The weight limit will be determined by how the mantel is mounted on the wall. It usually comes with a long wooden slab that is secured to the wall first, after which the mantel (which is hollow) is simply slid onto and rested on it. If I were you, I'd invest in a couple of mounting brackets to help secure the mantel. Simple L-brackets can be found in a variety of locations. Brackets come in a variety of shapes and styles, from plain to ornate. The TV should then be fine unless it tips forward for some reason, which can happen even if it is on a table.

I am very pleased with the quality and appearance of the leg and skirt kit
5/5

I purchased this mantel with the leg and skirt kit and am very happy with the quality and appearance. I believe it represents excellent value for money, and I would purchase it again. As others have mentioned, the packaging isn't the best, and one of the legs was a little wobbly from shipping, so I had to use some wood glue to fix it. However, none of the pieces were chipped or otherwise damaged, so it wasn't a major issue. Most DIYers should have no trouble installing the mantel on their own. All you have to do now is buy the appropriate screws for your needs and attach the included 2x2 to your wall (it's also recommended that you use liquid nails, which I did). The mantel is then screwed to the 2x2 and you're finished. Because there are additional 2x2s to mount for the legs when using the leg and skirt kit, it can take a lot more effort. There are also more measurements to consider, and everything must line up correctly for the mantel to sit in the grooves. This may necessitate some leg cutting to shorten them, as it did in my case. Because the tile on my fireplace and the wall is raised, I had to use my table saw to trim the interior edges of the legs so they would fit flush against the tile and the wall. I hadn't anticipated having to do this, but it was necessary in my case due to the tile's width; if you're doing the entire kit with the legs, plan on a full day, including priming and painting. If you're just doing the mantel, it'll probably only take you 2 - 3 hours. If you want to see how it looks, I've attached a photo of the completed installation. Just keep in mind that the trim piece between the top tiles and the skirt/mantel in my photo is not included in the kit. We left it because it was already in place and looked great with the legs.

Frederick Mantel Shelf, Unfinished Oak, Stain Grade I stained and finished the Stain Grade Unfinished Oak version of this mantel, which arrived in one piece and exactly as described on the website
5/5

It was easy for me to apply a uniform coat of stain to the wood. Before staining, I used a pre-stain and let it dry. After that, I finished with three coats of polyurethane. Others complained that the wood didn't take the stain well. br>br> I'm guessing these people bought the $10 less expensive version that says "paint ready" right on the box. You'll need to pay a few dollars more for the "Stain Grade Unfinished Oak" if you want to stain and finish the wood.

I bought the paintable version and gave it a chocolate brown paint job
3/5

It was a breeze to paint, and two coats were all that was required. The setup was a challenge - They only give you a 2x2 plank and that's it. Because I didn't have studs where I needed them, I used one wood screw and two toggles. So that wasn't difficult, but without a nail gun, attaching the mantel to the plank was a different story. It was difficult even after predrilling the holes in the mantel and plank. There are far superior mounting systems available to make life easier.

Craftsmanship of the highest order
5/5

I purchased the unfinished mantle shelf (along with the legs) and stained it to match my cabinetry with English Chestnut stain. Superb craftsmanship, excellent quality, and ready to stain when received. This is an incredible deal. I would strongly suggest it.

An mid- Prices for the first tier mantel and the entry level mantel
4/5

This is only paintable; if you want to stain, get stain grade. This is a reasonably priced mantel, and for what it's worth, it's made of real wood and $20 less than the one at Home Depot. It needed to be primed and painted white before it could be installed over the fireplace, and it now looks great. Advantages: br>br> br>There is no MDF in this construction. Cons: br>Decently Pricedbr>br> br>It doesn't come with screws, so you'll have to go to the hardware store to get some. br>The 2x2 is a joke; they should make it so that at least a 2x3 or 2x4 can fit inside of it to make it stable when installed. They should use wood putty to fill in any uneven spaces, but spackle can easily fix this.

Mantelpiece of Superior Quality- This mantel on my wall has a great price and I love the profile on it
5/5

Solid wood with a smooth finish that is ideal for painting. Even the least handy homeowner will find it simple to put together. Other mantels lacked the molding details found on this one. Shipping is free, and delivery is quick. I'm going to get a new mantel for my other room.

Mantel of high quality! This mantel is absolutely stunning
5/5

I bought this mantel to put on a blank wall so I could hang an antique mirror over it in my home office, which I'm making more formal. br>I applied a coat of primer to the mantel. After staining, three coats of polyurethane were applied. Then I hung it on my wall and hung a mirror above it, and there you have it! It appears to be excellent. br> It's a good product. It was well-built and stainable. I've already gotten a lot of positive feedback on it. I 100% satisfied with this purchase

Amateur installation, but a lovely mantel! A light color was used to stain it
5/5

I followed the installation instructions, but the screws should have been 3" rather than 2. If you're going to put it on a brick fireplace, you'll need anchors for the screws. With some difficulty, but little experience, my son and I installed ourselves. Now that we've done it once, I believe we'll be able to do it easily.
