Our hand carved mantels are genuine. The majority of them come from a time when nails didn't exist and people had to rely on mortise and tenon joinery to keep their wood together. The square cutout is a mortise pocket that has been in the wood for over 200 years. The holes were used to secure the pieces together by driving wooden pegs through them. We always place the mortise pockets on the top/bottom or back of the piece so that they are less visible but still provide the original qualities and characteristics.

I contacted the seller and asked that the mantle be slightly wider than the one shown, which he graciously agreed to. We'd never hung anything like this before, so we had to think creatively. It requires more than just the mounting, as the directions also state. It was well worth it! Thank you a million times.
