Questions & Answers

What is the amount of negative ions produced?

Negative ions cause Ozone production that is much higher than that found even in outdoor rainfall, which most people are unaware of. Ozone, i. Negative ion production by air purifiers has been shown in extensive research by the National Institutes of Health to be extremely harmful to people with respiratory problems, beginning with asthma and progressing to other more serious conditions. When used in a closed indoor environment, levels can rise to dangerously high levels, exacerbating respiratory problems! Even the sale of ozone-producing purifiers is prohibited in California! Don't be fooled by buzzwords like "plasmawave," and keep in mind that many air purifiers won't even mention the word "ozone." You'll always notice "negative ion" production when Ozone is being produced. Many air purifiers have a negative ion, plasmawave, feature that can be turned off or bypassed, and I never use it on my Winix 5300 now that I know about it. Some purifiers have a negative ion feature that you can program to turn off after 2 minutes and simply ventilate your space. Before returning to the closed environment, it will take 3 hours to remove the Ozone. This isn't possible with all purifiers! Otherwise, the Winix is effective, but respiratory patients should be cautious.

the difference between 5300 and 5300 5500 and 2500- ?

My 5300- The 2 came with a remote, but it also turns off and on my Samsung TV, so I don't use it. To tell you the truth, the c535, 5500- 2, as well as 5300 With the exception of a minor difference, the two are nearly identical. As a result, I'd choose the one with the lowest price, even though they're all great!

Is there anything that can be washed? Is it possible to remove the carbon filter? Is it the hepa filter that you're looking for? The description of winix and the website are both devoid of specifics. ?

I changed the carbon filters in my Winix 5200 every three months because it came with four of them. I had no idea they were washable, but since I had extra, I doubt they are. The prescreen, on the other hand, can be soaked in a mild solution (I use a mixture of vinegar and water and soak it for 15 minutes). After 20 minutes, rinse gently. I don't even do that anymore since I stopped smoking. I vacuum with a soft brush and it works like a charm. 🙂

Has anyone found a less expensive filter replacement? There are a lot of them for the 5500, but none for the 5500-X. ?

If you really need to save money on filters, use genuine Winix ones instead of the 5300-style ones. They're both the same size and provide the same level of HEPA filtration, but the carbon filter is made of non-recyclable materials. Instead of a plastic pellet cartridge, you can use washable sheets. br>br>I'd rather go with genuine 5300-style carbon filtering and save some money. Instead of buying generic filters that may compromise the HEPA, get two of them.

DANGER OF OZONE! There is one major flaw in this product's advertising that could lead to a legal battle
3/5

According to the PLASMA WAVE technology, no ozone is released. If you've done your homework, you'll discover that it does, in fact, produce ozone. They claim to be less effective than other air purifiers, but what does that even mean? They are required by law to include a warning in their product advertisements, but they do not. br>I only did a little research before ordering this product. I was perplexed as to why, despite the fact that the air smelled clean, it made me dizzy for the first few days. My investigation was prompted by a lightheaded feeling. The plasma wave, which is supposed to reduce ozone levels, can be turned off. I switched it on and went to the kitchen on the third day of having it. When I detected a strong odor of smoke, I dashed to the living room, where I discovered a bright red air quality sensor. The purifier emitted a strong odor of smoke. I turned it off and will return it as soon as possible. It's time to return to my research in search of a higher-quality one.

It works
5/5

The eczema was gone, and the allergies were gone. On sunny days, there will no longer be any glitter in the air! Our house is made of wood. There is no carpet in this room. There are seven people, three dogs, and three cats in this picture. The amount of hair and dust that I have to deal with on a daily basis is indescribable. I had almost given up. I started looking into air purifiers. They have a lot to teach us. Anyway, I chose 1 and was successful in obtaining it. It's been four days, and we're still in awe. Baby hasn't had a runny nose in two days, despite the fact that he has had one since birth. He has eczema, which is mostly under control thanks to the diapers and wipes we use, but he still has a small rash that never goes away completely. It's no longer there. I haven't had a runny nose in two days, and neither of us has coughed. We were all coughing the entire time. br>br>The dust. br>br>It's also gone. Dusting twice a day had previously proven ineffective. There isn't any evidence of it. Aside from being made of wood, one end of the house is completely made of glass. So there was always "glitter in the air," as my toddler put it, even after I dusted. It, too, is no longer there. br>br>It could all be in my head, but I swear my mood and energy have improved as well. (It could be in my head, or it could be because the house appears to be clean. ) In any case. This is a win in my book! ) If you have any problems with this type of thing, you should consider getting one. I wish I had done it a long time ago! I shared this on social media, and it has now been ordered by five of my friends. We're getting a second one for the house's lower level. We have a large open floor plan with a lot of space. If your home doesn't have an open floor plan, you might want to consider adding a second sleeping area. br>br>***To date, six friends/family members have placed orders and are delighted with their purchases! A fantastic purchase! **UPDATE** It is now February 2019. There are currently three of them.

The most bang for the buck
5/5

For almost a year, I've been looking for a new air purifier, doing research here and there in the hopes of finding one that meets all of my needs. I'm looking for a unit that can handle a larger room, has an auto feature, has reasonably priced replacement filters, and matches my home's decor. The thick blanket of smoke that blanketed the area (and still does) every morning hastened my research because of a recent 80,000-acre fire. In the end, the Winix 5500-S is a good choice. 2 was perfect for my needs. br>br>The unit was delivered on time, and unpacking was simple. It took me about 5 minutes to set up and get it running. The body is made of a tough, matte black plastic that feels solid and long-lasting. The front panel is simple to remove and secures to the unit with a clever magnetic clasp. This allows you to access your prefilter for bi-weekly cleaning and hepa/carbon filter replacement. There are three filters in total, each of which fits snugly inside the filter chamber and is held in place by a prefilter that snaps firmly into place. br>The top-level control panel is simple and easy to use. The buttons are clearly labeled, and visual prompts describe what each one does, eliminating any guesswork. The level of air cleanliness is indicated by a stylish indicator light bar that runs along the bottom of the control panel and has a three-color scheme. Green indicates that something is in good condition, orange indicates that it is acceptable, and red indicates that something is not in good condition. You can set the machine to one of four fan speeds manually, or select auto mode and let the machine choose the settings based on sensor data. This entails a completely hands-off approach. A night mode reduces noise by turning the fan down to its lowest setting and dimming all of the panel's lights. If you have the unit set to auto mode, a light sensor will detect (or not detect) any light in the room and automatically switch to night mode. On the control panel, there is also a filter change indicator light. The hepa filter should last about a year, based on my research. It also includes a pre-installed battery for the remote control. It's not something I intend to use, but it's there if you want it. br>This air purifier is the quietest I've ever had. It's almost undetectable at level 1, and it's no louder than a standing floor fan on high at level 4 turbo mode. This was a pleasant surprise. br>It does an excellent job of cleaning the air. In my 350-square-foot bedroom, I'm currently using it. I don't have the tools to test it, but according to their website, I should be getting at least 4 air changes per hour, which is the minimum required for allergy relief and serious air purification. When I run this with the door shut to the rest of the house, there is no smoke smell in the bedroom at all, and it was surprising to walk from the bedroom into the rest of the house after the first night. br>This unit has far exceeded my expectations and fulfills all of my requirements for an air purifier. When funds allow, I intend to purchase two more of these for my combined kitchen/dining/living room area of 700 square feet. I'll be able to put these on opposite sides of the room and have more than enough coverage. This is an excellent unit that I would strongly recommend. This is simply unbeatable in terms of price and feature set. The price is reasonable, the replacement filters are inexpensive, it covers a large area, and it comes with numerous features. br>br>09/28/2019br>This machine is STILL going strong two years later. I've had this guy quietly working away in the house keeping my air clean, aside from the occasional vacuuming of the prefilter and the yearly filter changes. At this point, I can confidently state that it is a long-lasting machine!br>br>08/20/2020br>3 years later, it is still going strong! I'm only posting this because California is experiencing yet another terrible fire season, and I'm in a zone where there's a lot of smoke. There isn't much else to report besides regular pre-filter cleanings and the yearly replacement of the hepa and carbon filters; I didn't expect this thing to last this long because I run it 24/7, often on its highest setting to get the best results. I now have two, and I purchased a third last year to provide more coverage throughout the house. This is something I would strongly advise anyone to do. br>br>01/03/2022br>I was looking for a new filter on here today and realized I had a review for this product, which I've had for 5 years. I just added two more photos (the last two in my string of photos) to show that I STILL own this device after 5 years of constant use. For nearly the entire time, I've had it set on the third setting, just one below its highest setting, and I can confidently state that this is a solid piece of machinery. I'm surprised he hasn't given up on me already! If you're concerned about durability, this air purifier is, at least in my experience, extremely durable. With this product, Winix has hit a home run. I believe this will be my LAST update on the product (unless, of course, it lasts another ten years, in which case I'll throw a party for it!). )br>br>***I'd like to add my voice to those who claim that this device emits dangerous levels of ozone. That isn't true at all. You can go to the California Air Resource Board's section on California Certified Air Cleaning Devices for more information. This will provide you with a list of air purifiers that have passed state testing and produce less than 0. Ozone concentration of 050 parts per million. This device, like all others from Winix, is on the list, which means that it meets or exceeds the safety standards. Make sure you do your own follow-up research on an item after reading a review. The amount of false information on the internet is insane! Don't just take someone's word for it; check out what they're claiming!.

It even comes with a previously used filter! It was a nice product, but it came with a used filter, which was a letdown
3/5

Take a look at the photo of the filter right out of the package. I had sick kids at the time, was busy at work, and there was a fire in town, so we needed the filter right away, but this is the filter right out of the box. When buying, be cautious and make sure the filter is clean and new. Amazon will take advantage of you in order to save a few dollars; clearly, this was a return.
