I also needed cables that were 40" long. These were purchased and were found to be effective. To pull the handle, you simply need to reach down a little further. I am overjoyed!
My husband dismantled the chair as well as our cables so that we could match them up. These cables worked perfectly with the couch we bought from Costco. They're fairly generic, in my opinion. Good luck
It's preferable to make it as long as possible. With the added length, it will still work. However, the old one must be removed before the new one can be installed. Remove it and measure it, or look for a video on YouTube. I have a leather sectional that I turn upside down and unhook the cable from, then secure the top with two screws where the pull is. I hope this has been of assistance.
We used the one that was already on the recliner to determine the size.

The original pull on my Ashley chair and a half broke one day. We (my husband and I) didn't even need to watch a YouTube video to put it on; it wasn't easy, but anyone with even a rudimentary mechanical aptitude can do it. It works perfectly, and we don't have to make any adjustments or take it off and put it back on the correct way, as we usually do. I'm glad I got my chair back, and I'm glad it came in a two-pack in case something similar happens again in the future. I'm not sure why I put off ordering this replacement for so long.
To replace a broken cable on one of my recliners, I ordered these pull handles. The original pull cable snapped inside the channel and yanked the recliner right out from under you. This was a perfect match for the original part. It was a pain in the neck because I had to remove the center console to get to the screws that held the mounting plate in place. It wasn't difficult, but it was inconvenient. The molding of the pull handle and the length of cable from the handle to the plastic mounting plate are the only significant differences between this and the one that was originally installed. It's about an inch shorter than the previous one. This merely indicates that the pull handle is positioned lower in the cushion. This isn't a major concern for me. The action is nice and smooth, and the resistance is identical to the original. All of the mounting clips and the retaining hook matched the old one perfectly. I've only had these for about a week, so only time will tell how good they are and how long they will last.
7 months later, there is an addendum. How to install this was demonstrated in a YOUTUBE video. I ordered it because it appeared to be something I could do. I was able to get right in without any problems, and I made a minor mounting modification to make things a lot easier if I ever have to do this again. The bottom line. I was able to save a significant amount of money as a result of this. br>Addendum 2 for the year 2021. I am not going to purchase this product again. Substandard manufacturing at a low cost. The first one lasted roughly three months before the cable snapped. The second one lasted approximately three months as well.
The good news is that they are a perfect fit for my sofa. The bad news is that the product itself is uncomfortable to use because the pull handle sits directly on top of the mounting bracket when the cable is fully retracted. When you sit on top of it, it has no compression or give, which makes it uncomfortable. My couch's original piece had a spring between the bracket and the handle, which allowed it to flex out of the way. br>br>Adding a 2 cent spring to this product would significantly improve it.
We've had this on a sectional seat for almost a year, and the handle has finally given way. I feel compelled to comment- It performs much better and more smoothly than the original pull. It only took my 17-year-old son 10 minutes to install, so it's not difficult; good value for two; We now have an extra one in case we need it for other seats.
I had no idea what to look for when ordering a replacement. Gerry- For a few months, I rigged a replacement cable that worked. That resulted in a failure. On Amazon, I came across this book by chance. It was a breeze to set up. It's a cinch to use. Definitely a good investment. Now you have a back-up in case the first one fails (it comes with the second). I'd suggest it.
Rather than calling and dealing with repair, I decided to purchase these and hope for the best. br>br>These were identical to the ones that were replaced.
For a long time, I've been reclining in my couch and loveseat! I was about to go out and purchase some new furniture when I came across these on YouTube! br>br>I'm getting a new set for the other recliner right now! I was able to save thousands of dollars on new furniture because of this! br>br>I don't care how long they last; they were simple to put together, and I'm not exactly handy.
