It works great. Keeping grease from splattering over the cooktop and the items on the other burners is what it is supposed to do. In addition to steaming hot dog buns while the franks cook, I have used my steamer to steam a bag of rice. The same applies to that as well.

It does the job properly, but we found it to be not as sturdy as we would have liked

Despite its size, this screen is appropriate for a pan of 9". If you use a larger skillet than that (ex. a 12" cast iron skillet), you'll need a lot of unoccupied space. In my experience, an 8-inch screen might seem generous, but it generally isn't marketed as a 12", so it fits its description perfectly. The mesh holds up well to small use cases, which is not always the case with less expensive splatter guards. Specifically, I am concerned about the durability and longevity of the product. Because the wires that form the frame for the mesh are barely inserted into the wooden handle, the whole thing is extremely floppy. A metal rod sits in a "U" channel that is a part of one piece with a handle, and I'm worried it's going to break off when frequent use is applied to it. While I don't expect that to happen anytime soon, I certainly will continue to use this tool.
