There is really only a very small amount of pressure required. When you press the vacuum button, it'll catch under the lip of the jar top and you'll hear it pop! Once the lid is unscrewed, remove it. A jartop isn't easily removed as if it had a beer cap on it.

In the past, I dented perfectly good knives when I hit jar covers with my blade. As I watched organized soprano on YouTube, she said she didn't know what she was doing before she had this device, and as soon as I saw it, I rushed to Amazon and ordered one. It's not commonly the behavior of mine to do such things, but I live alone and I have been injured in the past, leaving me weak at my wrists. I have difficulties opening jars because I have a hard time getting them open. My minimalist kitchen has won a permanent home for this little piece of art. Unless you know that they have previously struggled with jars or have arthritis, it would be odd to give it as a gift unless you know the person has struggled with jars or had arthritis A kitchen is the only place where you need one.
Now, just to let you know, I received this. . . My first attempt at opening a jar was to open a jar of Costco minced garlic. The idea of trying it excited me.
