My main source of food is mainly food processors and grating planes as I'm an avid cook and in the kitchen all the time. Before purchasing this food mill, I only used graters and food processors. Taking the plunge and purchasing this one was a good decision. I am rather disappointed after using it for the first time. For a marinara sauce made with cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, and thyme, I wanted to see how it did with cherry tomatoes. My entire box of cherry tomatoes was cut in half lengthwise so that the mill could crush and extract the juice more effectively. The mill is extremely sturdy and well made, but, I must say, it is a pain to use. Unlike other rotary plates, the rotator plate connected to the hand crank is located so close to the grating discs that it is hard to crush and capture. To speed up the process, I divided cherry tomatoes in half to speed up the process. However, I still had to move them around and As I tried to push down the small tomato halves on the grating disc, I kept pushing the tomato halves into the raised lip of the rotator plate. My disc had the largest opening so there wouldn't be a lot of friction when shredding the paper. It took a long time to process two pounds of cheese, considering I had to do it a handful at a time. It was necessary for me to use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the mill constantly in order to keep the tomato chunks where they could be caught.
