The item is already put together. However, I believe you are referring to the method of application. Simply place the rotating piece on the inside of the can's edge, close enough to the can's edge that the rectangular shape almost rests on it. It will open if you start winding.
It cuts around the circumference of the can, allowing the lid to come off in one piece. It's a fantastic resource.

We purchased this can opener just over a month ago, and no matter how well we dry it, the blades and turning parts continue to rust, culminating in today's discovery of rust in my tuna can. What a pity, because it's a very simple opener.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised at how well this works. I've always thought Amazon products were good, but this is by far the best can opener we've ever used. I never expected a single-stick can opener to do such a good job. You simply turn it on, it grabs the can, and it opens it on the first try. When you're finished, you can even replace the lid. The nice thing about this is that there are no holes for the water to get stuck in when you put it in the dishwasher. I'm thrilled to have received it, and my wife is as well.
Even though the cans have a pull-tab, I use this can opener because my cat only consumes 1/3 of a can of cat food per day. I'll be able to easily replace the top lid for the next two days. The handle and crank of this can opener are covered in a grippy rubbery coating. This can opener is quite nice. There are no issues.
Threads of metal and shards of metal! This is not a good opener to buy. When we opened a can of tomato sauce, the can lid was covered in small metal threads. As you poured the contents of the can out, these threads were easily detachable! Do you eat metals? Thank you, but no thanks. For reasons of safety, this opener should be taken off Amazon's list. As soon as possible.
It's nice and light, and even with my bad arthritis, I was able to easily turn the handle. Unfortunately, this could be due to the fact that the device REFUSES to grip onto any can and thus does not function. I can tell from the reviews that many people were pleased with their devices, but that about 7 percent of them were not. 10% of these openers are defective. Amazon refunded my money and didn't wish for me to return it.
It would be fine if it worked as well as the show on their video, but don't waste your money on it. It serves no purpose at all. DISAPPOINTED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT.
Take a look somewhere else. Every time I use it, I make sure to clean and dry it thoroughly. I'd only used it a few times, and now the teeth of the gears don't mesh together, and rust has begun to form all over the place.
Pros: It works flawlessly and takes up significantly less space than my previous handheld can opener. It also does not require a lot of force to use. There are no sharp edges at all. br>br>Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of disadvantages to using this product. If you can call it that, it takes a few more turns to open cans than I'm used to, which could be due to the rotation radius around the can. It's subtle, but it doesn't bother me in the least. It also doesn't come with a bottle opener, which may be a deal breaker for some. However, I had not anticipated or required one.
