When I see a new kitchen electronic product, it piques my interest, but I usually put it off for a while. Because I'm getting together with my daughter and her family for the first time in a year for an indoor meal, I decided to take a chance with this electric fondue/raclette combination. My vintage fondue pot is adorable, but I have to use gel fuel to keep the cheese warm after it has been heated on the stove. We can cook almost the entire meal in the middle of the table with this fantastic appliance. Fondue or broth in the center, vegetables, fish, or shrimp on the grill top, and cheese in the raclette pans beneath the top heating element It's fantastic, and I only have a few minor complaints for such a high-quality product. br>br>There are numerous warnings to preheat both elements to burn off any manufacturing oils, which I did. I did it twice to be sure, and the first time there was barely a smell and a smidgeon of smoke; I wasn't alarmed at all because I'd expected more. I wish there was a switch other than the two dials on the front to turn it on and off because it's always on when it's plugged in. I'd like to be able to turn it off without having to get up from my seat. I finally figured out that if I use a power strip with a switch, I can extend the appliance power cord and turn it off by flipping the switch. It takes several minutes for both heating elements to reach the desired temperature, so I know I should prepare it ahead of time. The element above keeps the lower level warm and broils, rather than cooking. The splatter guard, which also keeps the fondue sticks in place, wobbles with movement because it's just resting inside the bowl. My second criticism is that the splatter guard, which also keeps the fondue sticks in place, wobbles with movement because it's just resting inside the bowl. My final point of criticism is that the nonstick coating on a couple of the raclette pans had minor flaws. I didn't want any rough spots, and I didn't want anything that would affect the function. If you don't let the pans cool down before putting them in water, they may warp due to the thin metal. As a test, I made scrambled eggs, which cooked evenly on top of the grill. It took a long time beneath and, as expected, they cooked from the top. After that, I made a small batch of fondue, which turned out to be delicious. We'll have broth in the fondue pot to cook shrimp, vegetables and fish filets on the grill, and a fancy Swiss cheese in the raclette pans to pour over the simple boiled fingerling potatoes that I'll precook on the stovetop for a full dinner. Cornichons and mustard sauce will be served, as both are favorites of mine. br>br>The bottom line is that, like bread machines, ice cream machines, tabletop sandwich makers, and a slew of other kitchen appliances, this is a one-of-a-kind item that we can do without. However, I adore it and would buy it again for a dinner party. I debated whether to give it four or five stars, but ultimately decided on five because I have yet to see another configuration quite like it. I prefer it to the rectangular centerpiece tabletop cooking appliances, and I'm relieved that I won't have to smell burning gel fuel at the dinner table.
I bought it for my college-aged daughter, who is now learning and enjoying cooking while she is away. With her friends, I believe she will have some enjoyable and memorable moments. We gave it to her when she got home and had a test run with the family, and we were all blown away by the quantity and variety of food we could produce. Instead of cheese fondue, we served a seasoned broth with skewered seafood. Sausages, lamb cuts, sirloin bits, shrimp, and chicken pieces were on the hot plates. We made tiny vegetable casseroles with the raclettes. Before we sat down at the table, we spent 15 minutes putting together the spread. br>After seeing how much fun we all had, I'm going to buy another one for my wife and me to play in the backyard with friends this fall.
We used the grilling surface to cook small cubes of steak for dipping and made a quick pub fondue from a book recommended when we bought the fondue pot; it worked perfectly and we'll be using it again in the future. The small grill pans were ideal for finishing the steak or warming up other ingredients because the heating element for the pans is located above the grill plate, so par cooking on the grill and finishing to desired doneness in the mini pans is ideal for larger groups or when one child prefers medium well and the others prefer medium rare. br>The pot and the grill plate each have their own temperature controls, but because the grill plate surrounds the pot, I believe there is some heat transfer because the bottom of the pot near the plate was hotter on the cheese. As you finish the cheese, lower the temperature because it can quickly become too hot and scorch the cheese; once it's below the minimum line, turn the pot temperature all the way down.
Note: If it's plugged in, it's on; there's no "off" button, only "low. "br>We're going to try it out tonight for hotpot. If necessary, I will revise my evaluation.
You get to enjoy the entire Melting Pot experience from the comfort of your own home. To fully cook meats and vegetables, everything gets very hot. Potatoes were the only thing I prepared ahead of time. With a teriyaki sauce in the middle bowl, we used the grill ring to cook chicken, elk, zucchini, and onions. The center heats up to the point where you can boil and fully cook whatever you put on the skewers, or you can keep it low for fondue. Because of the potential for odor, the directions state that everything should be heated before use. We didn't notice any odors, but it's probably still a good idea to burn off any leftover chemicals. I'm glad I got it when I did because I'm sure the price will go up once word gets out!.
Terrible. One piece of 2 oz steak took 30 minutes to cook. The temperatures on both sides are different. I was unable to return because my return window had closed when I ordered on April 1st, and I attempted to return on May 13th. I suppose it's my fault, but it's a waste of money!.
On New Year's Eve, we had a Fondue night. It was a lot of fun! This Fondue can be prepared in three different ways. In the small triangular shaped pans, fondue, grill, and sauté. My adolescent sons and their girlfriends had a great time.
It's a big hit with my newlywed daughter. We use it for a family gathering and it works great. Many people complimented me.
