Questions & Answers

Can anyone tell me what size tubing this is?

In this case, we are using 5/16'' tubing for use with 5/16'' spouts. This is the industry standard size that is used by professionals across

Can you tell me the size of the bit you need?

It takes 5/16 inch to drill a hole in a To stick the tubing in, I think we used 3/8 at the lid of a gallon jug.

Is it necessary to tap a sugar maple that is larger in diameter (before it is tapped)?

A tree should have a diameter of at least 10 inches for one tap, as I was told when I began this. At least 15 inches is the minimum height of trees I tap. The taps can be further apart on larger trees, but I would tap only one tree, and more trees can be tapped.

This kit comes with what type of filter? Are you looking for a particular brand, size, or material?

It is a large cloth cone filter, but it doesn't say what brand it is or what its size is

Suitable for Birch Water or Sap, too
5/5

Birch trees in Alaska were easily tapped with this device. In the winter, the water at my seasonal wildland fire base is shut off, so I have to haul water from a long distance from my cabin until all the ice melts. My front door is right next to these trees, and I simply tap them. I get several Gallons of clean fresh water every day when three or four are going at once. The water from Birch trees is much less sweet than maple and I use it for everything from making pasta to drinking as a morning beverage. There are about 10 maple trees in a hectare Maple syrup is made by converting one sap to another. Around 100 Birch trees are left in the world Maple syrup is made by converting 1 sap to 2. My experience with boiling the water to syrup is limited, but I find the water to be Around this time each year, I live off the stuff for about a month, and these are great for carting it off.

This is a very nice It is a nice set with more than enough taps for a great family project*br>*br>Installation is a breeze with this set
4/5

Getting the tubing to fit on the tap is a little difficult, but if you let the piece soften in hot water for a few minutes, that should make it more convenient. The tubes in this set aren't very long, so that's if there is one complaint about it. It's easy to route the lines with 1/4" ID tubing from your local hardware store (and even some barbed T fittings if you want to combine several lines into one), and you can get there from there. It came out much better for me if I poked holes in the plastic caps of the bottles and fed the tubing into them. With the drilled hole in the cap combined with the tightly fitted tubing, a quick switchout was possible and unwanted pests and dirt were kept I was glad to learn how easy it was to collect the data. A kit like this one is designed to help you do just that. One of the most interesting aspects is the inconsistent nature of sap production. There was not much growth on my two sugar maples when it was below freezing. Sometimes I drew 5 gallons per day, but on others I drew nothing at all. Here is the step by step process of cooking A lot of time and effort is involved in this process. Cooking with my propane smoker, I produced about 3/4 gallon of meat per hour with a single burner. The stovetop is blazing with 1. In addition, the final cookdown itself is not as easy as it may appear. When the syrup thickens, you have to keep stirring and controlling the heat, otherwise it can get out of control in no time. The last time I saw a 3 quart sauce pan jump on a glass top stove was a couple of weeks ago. In fact, this worked just fine when cooking on low-medium heat with about 3" of liquid. With kids in the vicinity, be very cautious when you are performing these final steps. Furthermore, I was not aware of the "sand" that forms as the process proceeds. The syrup is very gritty in consistency, making it unpleasant to drink. Before I put the syrup in canning jars, I had no idea how vast it was. The sediment settled to the bottom of the jar just like sand. In my opinion, my "final result" was not as good as I thought at first. A little runny and pale in color, it was easy to eat. This sand. . . I just don't get it. My curiosity got the better of me so I cracked open one of my jars and tried to see what I could come up with. I was pleased to discover that the "sand" had settled at the bottom, while the syrup poured back into the pan very smoothly. A spoonful of the sand easily spooned out of the jar, since it occupied one eighth of the volume. It was my pleasure to prepare this- About another 20% of the syrup was sanded off, and the color began to change. Although I had to manage the heat and stir quite a bit to get there, I managed to do it. I am sure the flavor will differ from batch to batch and from tree to tree, but I was surprised that the final product had a much stronger caramel flavor than I thought it would. It met my expectations, but it was not exactly what I was expecting. Unless you are a pro at creating hard candy, you do not want to overcook this or you will end up with When I re-read what I wrote, I decided to try cooking the sand a little longer after jarring the liquid syrup. As it turned out, the taffy was a success- It was a good candy that the kids liked. I think in the future I'll use it in place of sugar for BBQ sauces and rubs. Is there a reason not to? Overall, this is a wonderful project for a student to work on. But be aware that it will take a long time and you may use a couple of 20lb propane bottles in the process. It would be much easier and cheaper to just buy the real Message

Update My set of headphones has been the same every year and I have had no issues. However, there are a few things that might be helpful. Drilling holes in bottles' lids and screwing them on is my favorite part of making them. In any case, especially as the temperature changes, that can create a substantial amount of pressure inside the bottle. This year, I drilled an additional hole in the lid of the bottles using the smallest drill bit that I had to prevent the lid from falling off. In the past, I just left the lid loose to prevent this. As long as the opening is too small for most critters to find or exploit, it will accomplish the same goal. You can see this pic here.

With this kit you can do sugaring as a hobby
5/5

We have four maple trees in our yard a sugar maple, three silver maples, and one red maple. To see if I could produce maple syrup, I decided to tap the trees in an attempt to keep in touch with nature. Then, I decided to try the spike kit here since I researched the methods and equipment required. Despite only using a cordless drill and a rubber mallet to tap the spikes into the holes, they were extremely easy to install. The sap flowed into a few empty 1 gallon water jugs in minutes. I could barely keep up with it, and on a few days I was emptying the jugs daily to keep them from overflowing. This kit did a great job boiling nearly 28 gallons of sap down into several quarts of the most delicious maple syrup we've ever had (using a propane burner outdoors), so I was totally satisfied with how well it worked. I was astonished when most of my (definably urban) friends were surprised. It took only a few seconds for the spikes to be removed with a slight twist and tug, and you could easily clean them up afterwards It only takes a bit of dishwashing liquid and a quick rinse with mild bleach solution to clean up the kit, so I'm ready If you are curious about sugaring, I would recommend this kit without hesitation.

The taps are great! I bought these for tapping trees in our backyard and they worked really well
4/5

Make a hole of about 1-1/16 inch in diameter with a 5/16 bit. Aim for a depth of 5" deep, three feet up the tree, and lightly tap them in. When I originally ordered them, I wasn't able to get them fast enough. I had originally ordered 3' lines to put jugs on the ground. My solution was to nail milk jugs to the tree and then hang them on a string two feet down. It worked perfectly and kept everything clean. Through the lid of the jug, I drilled a hole that fit the tube, and a tiny hole for pressure relief. In my experience, I was able to pop off the lid with the tube still inside, empty the jug onto the ground, and then pop it on back up without anything contacting From six taps in five days, I gathered more than 30 gallons of sap. A tap can be easily cleaned and dried by hanging it.

I only have a beef with the system because the filter is hopelessly ineffective. A syrupy substance couldn't pass through it and it was very easy to rip. To end up getting sap out of it, I had to stab holes in it and filter it. If you don't have a cloth filter or just use something else, then you may want to consider that. I know it's frustrating to get hours or days into the process and find out something is wrong.

I also saw a review that said they filled the holes after removing taps - it seems a little strange. A tree is not healthy when it is exposed to that. You should let the tree heal itself if you want the tree to survive.

This is a great My experience with these spikes was good
5/5

Despite the fact that they don't have the rustic charm of steel spikes, the price was right and they seem durable enough to last a long time. The following tips can be helpful Upon removing them at the end of the season, they were stuck pretty solidly in the trees, and pushing on the hose barb that connected to the tubing seemed a little quirky (they are Getting a vice grips worked much better of I tried to pick up the main block part. Also, I got some moderately flexible wire that had a tiny hook at the end, so other than that, the tubing was pretty easy to clean. Wire should be fed through the tubing, then used to grab a small piece of cloth (*1 inch square), and pulled through the tubing to create Finally, if you are drilling a hole in a bucket lid, the tubing OD is a little larger than 5/16", so a 3/8" bit is best.
