Only iperEspresso capsules can be used with this machine. Other machines accept both capsules and ground coffee.
Illy is only interested in pods. It doesn't use the same kind of pods that you'd find in a kurig.
This is version X7, to be sure. This is the version I received.

When I ordered the machine, I had no idea it was a capsule machine and that Illy despises the environment. Now that I have the machine, I must choose between a costly, one-time purchase and a long-term commitment. time capsules, or I could try my luck at the mixed-games table. Take a look at the stainless steel, refillable capsule (an extra cost and part). So far, the buying process has been a huge pain in the neck. I'll be able to have a cup of coffee once I receive the capsule, assuming it works. Otherwise, I'll have to repack and return both items, and I won't be able to drink any coffee. Let's hope for the best!.
The capsule system works great and eliminates the hassle of using ground espresso. It's easy to use and gives you perfect espresso draws every time. This comes at the cost of less brewing control and a smaller selection of individual coffees than you'd get with ground espresso, as well as a potentially higher per-cup cost. In a side-by-side comparison, however, the pod machine performed as well as or better than the ground espresso machine, was more consistent, and was less messy. I also tried the Nespresso system, which was nice and had more coffee capsule options, but despite trying different coffee types in the Nespresso unit, the Illy machine produced better tasting espresso. Furthermore, the Illy machine produced espresso that was identical to the draws from the ground espresso machine, whereas the Nespresso unit did not. The milk frother is easy to use and clean up is simple. For the price, the machine is well-made and takes up little counter space. Unless you have an obsession with espresso, this is a great option.
This is the second machine I've ordered from Warehouse Deals this week, and the second to be defective; the first didn't work at all, and the second did, but the descaling light came on the minute I turned it on - I even attempted to de-energize myself. The light wouldn't turn off when I scaled it, so it's clearly broken. These machines are advertised as "new" with "possibly minor cosmetic damage," but be aware that two out of every two do not work.
I was really looking forward to getting this espresso machine, but I was let down. It didn't work correctly. The chrome on the part where the pod was installed began to peel away. This isn't worth the money, in my opinion. It took a month for me to receive my refund after I returned it.
When the machine is turned on, it takes a while for it to heat up - Then it immediately switches to a red blip mode under the! logo. What's strange is that the book follows all of the instructions. You don't have a lot of options when it comes to starting the machine, so you have to turn it on and off and restart it anywhere from 3 to 7 times to get it into the blue mode in the big button in the middle. which is ready to be served with a cup of coffee VERY unsatisfactory and time-consuming. The flaw was obvious, and the process for getting the machine replaced was a nightmare: Slow, perplexing, monotonous, and, to be honest, below par. However, once it's out, the coffee is delicious.
Because the base is now made of plastic rather than cast metal, it appears to be low-cost. Also, the steam knob on the side of the updated model has been removed. It's either all or nothing when it comes to foaming, and it's impossible to release steam to make more coffee once you've started - It will need to cool down for 20 minutes. On several levels, this is a significant step down from the original. On the plus side, it makes use of the Illy pods I've been hoarding.
This is an excellent espresso machine in a small package! Illy cups are extremely convenient, and they require very little setup and cleanup. I use one Illy iper to make a 1oz shot of espresso, then pour the frothed milk into a 6 oz cappuccino mug - it makes a great cappuccino! It's delicious.
7. Recieved 1 appears to be attractive; however, it is inoperable. There was a lot of water leaking all over the place.
