Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use it for water heating?

Only if you can get hot water to flow through the coil. (However, why would you need to heat water if you have hot water to run through the coil?)

Is it possible to hook this up to a kitchen sink? I don't have access to a garden hose outlet outside. Any recommendations for adaptors and the like?

Yes, simply purchase a 3/4 MNH x 1/2 MNPT adapter and connect the parts they provided to a sink, or simply purchase a 1/2 threaded bard and replace the parts they provided.

I have a 5 gallon pot with a diameter of 11 inches and a height of 10 inches. Is a 25' coil better or a 50' coil better for me?

I'm no expert, but I went with the larger coil because it was less expensive, and it will cool it faster at 50 degrees. A 5-gallon pot is what I use. By the time you reach the cooling stage, the 10 - 15 minutes have passed. Even if you only save 15 minutes, it's worth it, especially if you have a buzz on.

To the top of the coil, how tall does it stand?

16 inches in height

Buy it! It's very efficient, and it's almost as cheap as making one yourself! While it comes with a garden hose attachment (which is very handy), I connected it to a small fountain pump and circulated it in an ice water cooler
5/5

Because the pump is so efficient, the water that comes out is extremely hot, so have plenty of ice on hand; in the winter, I've also submerged the pump in the pool and simply run the water back into it. The needle could be seen moving from 200 to 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. The bottom line is that this is a fantastic cooling coil. I understand that prices fluctuate on here, but I actually researched the parts to build this and save money, and I got mine for only a few dollars more than the materials would have cost (50 feet of copper is not cheap).

Awesome - There were no issues, and the function was excellent
5/5

This has made me very happy. I'm a novice brewer who has only used it once, which was yesterday. It cost about the same as 50 feet of copper tubing for a fully assembled apparatus. Here are a few specifics: No, there isn't much in the way of packaging, but it arrived in perfect condition. Although the stems (inlet and outlet) are short, if you are concerned about your wort leaking over the edge of the pot, gently bend the entire neck so it is not near the pot's edge. Also, if you're concerned about leaks, get a few more hose clamps - Use two clamps per connection (invert their orientation) and, most importantly, gently heat the hose before sliding it on the copper so that when you tighten the clamps, they crush it down. br>br>In practice, I found that using a more moderate flow of water (which saves water) and agitating the wort with the cooler helped a lot. From left to right, up and down. in fact . The outflow would be cooler if I left it alone, but it would quickly heat up if I moved it around. That's the wort's heat dissipating. I didn't keep track of the time because I was too preoccupied with the task at hand. However, with a full 20qt, cooling below 80 F took no more than 5 or 10 minutes. kettle. br>br>There's one more thing. I used Star-San to sanitize my cooler. Instead of putting it in the boil, san it before using. 15 minutes prior to the end of the event. I did this because I had my cooler set up in the basement sink (where I had working plumbing) and was doing the boil in the kitchen upstairs. It seemed like a good idea to avoid dangling hoses and unnecessary complications when carrying a full kettle down the stairs. Aside from the use of a few Star-shaped objects, San, I don't see what the big deal is, and it actually seemed to make my life easier (and avoid preheating the copper, which is just more mass to cool). br>br>I'd buy this again in a heartbeat, and am sure it would cool larger batches quickly too, if I moved up in size (which I don't think I'll have to).

Works well, but could be bent better, stems are much shorter than pictured, and packing material is non-existent
3/5

It cools down quickly. My issue is that the main stem of the unit has worm claps on it. Because it will be in wort contact for me in 8-hours, I had to remove the lower one and replace it with copper wire. Batches of 10 gal. There is some crimping in the bends, which could be improved. The biggest annoyance is that the stems at the top for connecting the tubes are nowhere near as long as the pictures suggest, despite the fact that they need to come out further to prevent errant drips from getting into the wort. Finally, there is no packaging. Dude, you need to pack your belongings more efficiently. Mine was a little bent when it arrived, but others have complained about the same thing and have received even more serious damage. This price for a 50 footer, however, is unbeatable.

For the price, it's an absolute steal! Wow
5/5

just wow. This chiller is fantastic value for money. The metal is bent in a traditional circular configuration, which is simple in design. Each "layer" is spaced just far enough apart to provide the maximum amount of surface area possible. A clear tube with a host attachment is included in the kit. All you have to do now is connect it to a copper line and you're good to go. This purchase has left me completely satisfied, and it is well worth the money.

Since sliced bread, there hasn't been anything better for yeast
5/5

I've made a few batches of beer and was always concerned about cooling the wort quickly enough to avoid introducing any harmful bacteria while also cooling it slowly enough to avoid killing my yeast. Filling the sink with ice worked, but it was inconvenient. I was blown away the first time I used it! It is based on the radiator principle. The wort heats the copper tubing, which is then carried away by the water flowing through it. And, I must say, it happened quickly. The temperature dropped from 165 degrees to around 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. WARNING: The water that comes out of the chiller is extremely hot.

This wort chiller is a great value for the money
5/5

I just got it, put it together, and tested it. It performs admirably. 3. be cool In less than 15 minutes, 5 gallons of wort were heated to 65 degrees. This will be ideal for my small setup of 5 gallon or less. would probably work well for larger batches as well, but I rarely brew more than 5 gallons and usually only brew 2 gallons at a time. Batches of three gallons As others have suggested, tighten the clamps with a socket to ensure there are no leaks, especially on the inlet side, where I had to tighten it quite a bit to stop it from leaking. Overall, this is a fantastic product that is well worth the money if you plan on doing your own brewing. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> The hose clamps and small tubing were discarded. I replaced the garden hose on my basement sink with 3/8 dishwasher fittings on both sides. I couldn't crank up the water flow because the hose clamps were leaking too much, but with the dishwasher fittings, I can have it full blast and cool the wort much faster.

The price is hard to beat, and there are only a few minor flaws
4/5

It would be difficult to find a cheaper way to build a 50-foot chiller on your own. However, some concessions have been made. The bends appear to have been done by hand; they're flattened, which will make it difficult for the water to flow freely. The bottom bend appears to be flattened to the point of blocking the flow. I would have given it five stars if they had used a proper tube bender. It arrives unassembled, so you'll need to attach the tubing and hose adapter as soon as possible. It's not a big deal; in fact, instead of using the included clamps, some people may prefer to use a compression fitting to avoid leaks around the joints. A more expensive unit would have better bends, clamps, and hose; however, aside from the bends, this unit is well worth the money. However, at such a low price, it is certainly up to the task of what it was designed for.
