On the packaging, there is a small tick indicating that it is vegetarian-friendly. The beef granules and powder both make excellent gravies and are ideal for shepherd's pie and stews.

They sent me a box weighing 454 grams.
Yes, this Bisto powder is brown in color and made in the United Kingdom. In South Africa, where I was born and raised, many products are imported from the United Kingdom. This is exactly how I remembered it, and it's equally as tasty.

This is something I'll never run out of! Even though I could, I don't use it to make gravy. I mostly use it to add that extra beefy flavor and depth to dishes I'm making; it's great in Cornish Pasties, and I use it in my steak and mushroom pies. The steak and mushrooms are cooked first, then the Bisto is added. Then it all goes into my baking dish, with the pastry on top, and then it goes into the oven to cook. The bisto melts into the steak and mushrooms, thickening the pie's gravy. br>br>Keep in mind that Bisto contains a lot of sodium, so I avoid adding salt to anything I use Bisto in. It balances the scales.
My mother says: Law, who was originally from Brooklyn, used to make this because it reminded her of England. This is something that reminds my husband of his mother, so he makes it. His cousin despises him (despises him, Precious), because he was born in England but grew up on Long Island, and this is like school cafeteria gravy in England. She is from Bristol, but she now resides in Massachusetts, close to us. br>br>As a result, when she comes over, we don't eat it (plus, she brings fantastic homemade gravy). BUT, it's a pantry staple in our house, and I believe she doesn't like it because she ate too much of it, rather than because it's not tasty.
This traditional British thickener is ideal for thickening dark soups and casseroles. I dissolve a dessert spoonful in a small jug of water and add it to a casserole or soup to thicken and color it. This gravy maker doesn't have much flavor because it's primarily a thickener and colorant, but that's a good thing because it keeps meals from becoming too salty. Bisto is a staple in my kitchen, and I use it in curries, cajun soups, meat casseroles, and a variety of other dishes. It's something I can't live without.
My parents lived in England for many years, which is where my mother first learned about this, but the box I ordered was shipped from Ireland, and it was a staple in my childhood home and is now a staple in mine. My mother used it in steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie, and other dishes that called for beef gravy. When I was a kid, my favorite meal was when she cooked ground beef with an onion and then poured the gravy over mashed potatoes.
This gravy browning is found in every Irish kitchen cabinet and is used to thicken and enrich gravy for any type of beef roast. Adding it to the shepherds pie (along with corn starch for thickening) adds a lot of flavor to the dish. Tomato paste is used in a lot of American recipes. Oh, my goodness, you're completely wrong - Could you please tell me where the shepherd gets his tomato paste? No, Bisto is what you require!.
Bisto was introduced to me by an English roommate 30 years ago, and whenever I've been able to locate it, I've used it to make my gravy. I hadn't seen any in years until my family decided to become vegetarian. Bisto was exactly what I needed! I can now make a lot of our favorite comfort foods without using any animal products. I don't recall it being quite as salty as I recall, so I'm compensating. Bisto is back in my pantry, and I'm thrilled!.
Thank you, Amazon, for carrying this so that I don't have to rely on my English friends to send it to me! However, the product pictured is not the one I ordered. It is not in a canister as shown, but rather in a box. I buy two at a time and keep the extra one frozen in a freezer bag until it's time to open it.
My British wife has been using this recipe since she was a child. Nothing beats Bisto for gravy solutions because it makes a very rich, dark, and flavorful gravy. AWESOMEbr>If you need the best solution for using this, just ask; I'll receive notifications of questions and will pass along my wife's fantastic gravy advice.
