Questions & Answers

I have a large collection of tapes from a wide range of artists. Will these tapes be copied to a CD, or will there be copyright issues, or is this just for personal tapes?

Any recording gives you the right to make ONE copy: Whether it's vinyl, cassette, VHS, CD, or any other new technology, there's something for everyone. This way, if the original is damaged, you can still use your copy as a backup and avoid having to buy a new copy. And, of course, if the original is damaged, make a backup copy as soon as possible.

Is this something that can be used with recordings made at home? Over the years, I've amassed a large collection of cassette recordings of my family singing. ?

It'll work with any cassette player. My issue was that the USB connector cable into the tape deck was defective, and I couldn't get a stereo file in Audacity despite the tape being stereo. I didn't order another to see if this was a common issue. It's possible that you'll strike it rich and it'll work out.

Is it slow because it records analog data in real time, or does the conversion take a long time?

It takes a long time because it records in real time and then remasters it to digital.

It adds a significant amount of background noise to the mix
3/5

I gave it two stars because it actually works. However, the amount of noise it produces and adds to the recording is unacceptably high. It works fine for the spoken message tapes I'm archiving, but it wouldn't work if I tried to record music or make a recording for others to hear. br>I was able to reduce the noise by sitting on top of a roll of paper towels, which helped to cushion some of the impact. Vibrations were generated, which were injected into the mix in some way. br>As you can see in the attached photo, a blank audio tape was recorded to digital. The tape player injects noise into the mix, so all of the sound on the bars is noise.

This is a very useful device
5/5

I've had no issues with this device in the few weeks that I've had it. It's ideal for converting my old voice cassettes (books on tape, educational tapes, and so on) to MP3 files. It was simple to put together and operate. The "auto reverse" is one of my favorites. Begin the conversion, and it will complete both sides of the tape without having to flip it over. Audacity makes it simple to remove the blank spot caused by the direction change. br>br>I'm not going to waste my time converting music cassettes to digital because they were never known for their audio quality in the first place (portability was their only advantage), and converting them to digital won't improve that. It wouldn't be worth it, given how inexpensive it is to download original MP3s these days. If there is currently no other source for that particular piece of music, an exception may be made. br>br>As for the complaint about it being slow, analog to digital conversion must be done in "real time" because there is no other option. It will take an hour to convert a cassette that is an hour long (both sides), and the same is true for devices that convert vinyl record albums to digital; you must play the entire album before converting it. However, in that case, the time spent is usually well worth it, as the results can be spectacular. Especially if the record hasn't been played in a long time.

This is the most inept cassette recorder I've ever bought
3/5

This is the most inept cassette recorder I've ever bought. I understand that this is a very cost-effective method of creating mp3s, but the sound quality is terrible due to electronic interference and the lower-than-low bit rate. All you get is popping and crackling under the data you're trying to transfer with a low-quality tape head. Also, if you're doing any kind of long play cassettes, you'll need to buy a separate power adaptor because the battery life is almost immediately depleted due to the fact that it only holds two batteries. This item is not something I would recommend.

not user- Software that is easy to use and materials that are inexpensive
3/5

This converter was difficult to use and understand, despite the fact that it should be simple. br>The software is NOT user-friendly. The instructions are very limited and way too technical (I'm not an audio technician), and it takes some time to figure out how to use it. This is fine for a sound engineer with all the bells and whistles, but it will leave you scratching your head if you're not a sound engineer. br>After a lot of guesswork and research, I was able to get it to work, but I'm not sure how to remove the excessive background noise. There is a lot of it. The recorded sound was much too fast, and it took me a long time to figure out how to fix it. Once again, this is not a user-friendly environment! br>The tape player is made of cheap materials and is difficult to operate. The auto reverse switch seemed to have its own mind, working at times and not at others. The control buttons are small and difficult to distinguish. The speed of rewinding and forwarding is slow - Rewinding takes a long time. Overall, it worked, albeit in a frustrating manner. I recommend reading the instructions thoroughly, practicing with the player, having plenty of blank CDs on hand, and handling the player with care because it may fall apart before you know it. However, everything has gone well thus far. best of luck! This is something I strongly discourage you from purchasing. Cheap China BS isn't worth your time or effort.

When I went through the conversion, I didn't have the poor quality
3/5

I was able to convert my old band cassettes to MP3 format, and it worked perfectly. However, I had heard noise the first time, so I assumed it was the cassettes. However, some of the tapes I listened to when I first got the product didn't have the same poor quality when I converted them. So I revisited some of my earlier conversions and got better results the second time around. Different results were obtained with the same cable, device, and USB port. However, for the price I paid, I'm happy with my purchase.

A lot of bang for your buck! Many 63-year-olds are in this situation
5/5

Like 99% of seniors, I have a TON of cassettes from back in the day, and mine are kept in old boxes that have been moved to several different living quarters% SO! What do I do with all these cool mix tapes? Some of them are unusable because the tape has dried out and become brittle, but the ones that are still playable have found a new home, thanks to this cassette converter, which is a godsend! It's not the best piece of gear ever made, but for crisakes, it's less than $30! I'm sick of people buying low-cost items like this and expecting them to perform like a 5K Abbey Road Studio recorder! This little guy does the job; first, it doesn't damage your 30-year-old tapes; I tried playing them in a boom box and they were eaten right away; not so with this; it plays them perfectly, and the Audacity program is very user-friendly; I've converted over 20 of my old cassettes and I'm still going! GET IT! is my advice.

The concept was appealing to me
3/5

We had a lot of cassette tapes that we wanted to convert to MP3 because we were worried that they were starting to degrade. We were able to get the software up and running, as well as convert the first tape. We were able to use the USB cable to power the converter, and we were able to record the sound on the computer. The converter stopped working after recording the first tape. I installed batteries because I couldn't use the USB cable to power it. Then, when I ran the capture program, all I got was the sounds in the room, as if the microphone on the capture device was picking up sounds instead of the cassette heads. br>br>I returned the product, and the return went without a hitch, so I have no complaints there; my only issue is with the product itself.
