a little dissatisfied - Update
3/5

With the new Firmware Updates, I really like it. I purchased this unit for a number of reasons, including a larger screen with higher resolution and a number of cool apps such as History (find museums on the road), camp sites, parking sites, and so on. I also purchased this unit with the intention of using my Garmin micro SD high resolution maps, including Hunt View. I felt let down. Despite the fact that this device has a micro SD card reader and recognizes the 24K maps stored in its map file, it will not display them. Garmin high resolution micro SD maps are not compatible with the Overlander Unit, according to a lengthy call to Garmin support. In addition, unlike other Garmin outdoor handheld units, I discovered there is no backtrack trail feature. You believe that because this unit was created for use in the off-road environment, it will perform well. There would be a back track feature (rather than having to save the bread crumbs trail before turning back as in this unit) for trail users. In the forest, I've navigated sections of rocky trails where a back-up vehicle was required. It would have been nice to have the ability to keep track of things). Despite the unit's high price, I'll keep it for its other features; however, I'll have to use it in conjunction with a hand-held GPS to see Hunt View data. br>br>Recently updated review - Hunt View and other custom maps are now included in a new firmware update from Garmin. br>I adore my Hunt View Maps, which are seamlessly integrated into the Drive program. Now I'm a big fan of my gadget. If you can afford one, I would strongly suggest the Overlander.

It was so bad that I returned it after only an hour of use

Garmin, we're sorry, but we're out of luck. I could write a novel here about how bad of a failure this thing is, but I don't have the time, so in the interest of being helpful, I'll just say don't buy it; for $600, you could get a tablet system and a few pro versions of multiple apps that are so much better. This is a terrible, expensive, and redundant device that tries to do something that other systems can do far better. I was hoping for a "one stop" top grade "overlander" device as an avid camper, hiker, and owner of a decked out 4Runner that regularly hit the back roads. br>br>1 hour br>br>With that time and my knowledge, I spent it looking for known campgrounds, places, and backroads that an overlanding device should have. It was not only bad at that essential (missing basic stuff), but it was also bad at everything else - user interface, graphics, brightness, features, and anything else that a tablet or phone with apps can do better and with more sophistication, dyrt, backcountry, gaia gps, freeroam, iOverlander, and even USA topo maps, as well as GOOGLE maps, are just a few examples. Even the "cool" almost gimmicky feature that shows your vehicle's angles on the road (which, by the way, many newer 4x4 vehicles come with anyway) was useless. ) Increase the amount of redundancy in your system. br>br>I hold garmin devices in high regard for what they've accomplished in the GPS map and athletics communities. However, you should invest your money in something else. This turns out to be an absurdly overpriced, difficult-to-use device that Garmin is attempting to cash in on due to the popularity of the overland scene. Fortunately, this market is usually well-informed, so I don't see how this can last without significant software enhancements and features. This is my gift to those who are out on the trails. Friends, take another look.

No, I wouldn't tell a friend about this
3/5

I was planning a vacation with my wife and grandchildren and was considering purchasing a good GPS rather than relying on my phone. So, before I bought this, I read a lot of reviews about it. I decided to buy it because we're mostly good. After a while of use, the GPS became warm, but it seemed to work fine. Then, on the third day of use, I was nearly to my destination when the device went black and refused to turn on. I noticed how hot it was. So I took it off my dashboard and it turned back on about 10 minutes later. At the time, I wasn't too pleased with it, but I chalked it up to a fluke. Then, about two days later, as I was driving home from dropping my grandkids off at their mothers' house near Baltimore, the thing just stopped working again, this time near a confusing area. That was the final straw for me. When I returned to Pittsburgh, I gave it back. I'm very dissatisfied with this model, which I had high hopes for when I bought it. We'll just rely on my phone from now on. No, I wouldn't tell a friend about this.
