As far as I know, you can use either. I have a few set up and I have both Cat5e and 6 so I hope this helps.
There have never been any problems with rain or snow at my installations (TN area), however, there are all within a mile of each other.

The use of this would be for a communication link between my home (provider) and my sisters new rural home about 300 feet away line of sight. My first attempt was with a pair of Nanostation Loco M5. They were a complete failure. Nothing seemed to work. I was constantly going offline. With skepticism, I tried a pair of these. Then I realized how wrong I was! The difference is HUGE! There is no doubt that these guys are in control. It's a fantastic product! I got it up and running in record time, with 2 subnets trunked, offering commercial VoIP phone service, high speed internet access, and HD cable TV (using HDMI over IP adapters). It is as high as or higher than stated specs! The signal was not lost, there were no dropouts, and no glitches! It is easy to access from another subnet and has a great user interface! It's time to get one of these radios!.
The system was installed for creating a 2 mile network. Installation was simple, and it has been working without issues for more than a year now. As a result of the software, a signal survey and antenna alignment can be performed.
I would highly recommend it! dish set was received as described and delivered on time. Although the installation wasn't as straightforward as I wanted, I was able to set it up and get the dishes working. Having two buildings about 200 feet apart, signal strength is excellent, the throughput and bandwidth are excellent, and I am able to run a second network without any problems. If you're trying to connect one laptop to two different locations and only have one modem to do so, this is an excellent choice.
The purpose of this purchase was to create a wireless bridge between my house and my sons' house -- The distance between them is about 900', and there is about 100' of woodland between them. I believe there is a relatively clear line of responsibility I am using the site between the two houses.
I have the radios set to automatically adjust their power. There are a few oak trees in the way. As a result, they will do well on their own Although the antenna was adjusted to the lowest setting, it was still pulling a Trees can be seen through even the thickest forest. Even if it's having an effect on performance, it's not enough. It can reach up to 300Mbps, according to the radio. My Internet connection has 200Mbps and I can see 160Mbps of traffic over it. Set up - It was quite easy to set up. Although, in my case, I'm a Network Architect, so maybe not the best example for you.
My garage network is connected to my house network about 75 yards away with these cables. I got 302mbps throughput in both directions in PTP configuration that was easy to set up. It has been a relatively trouble-free day despite the inclement weather. It would be a good recommendation for I can't find a better deal than this.
Other reviews appear to be positive, so I'm It has been 2 months since we bought it and we have been trying to make it work. From point A to point Z, we've tried it all Going into the IP and play around in there is a bit of a point-and-shoot affair. Not a thing. It appears to be a hardware problem. I hope it can be rectified, but so far I'd recommend going to another provider. As soon as we find a solution, we'll update this post.
These are the second set of these that we have A first set of internet cables was to connect a building less than 150 feet from the first. There was a second set of cables that sent internet to another building about 1,000 feet away. After my first set did so well, I bought a second set to replicate that success. They are both very good at what they do.
There is a lot of cutting in and out between these two units, making it next to There is no real configuration assistance provided by the instructions provided. Basic PtP bridging is all that is needed. If I do not hear back from support within 3 days, I might change the rating. Email has not been answered for 3 days.
