However, the drive itself is excellent
3/5

The USB cables that come with this drive are fine for storing your files, but they have a major flaw that nearly caused me to return the two that I had purchased. br>br>Both drives would become unresponsive and lose connection while backing up and transferring files if they were not moved. I was almost ready to throw both drives away because I assumed they were both bad. But, before returning, I decided to try out some new cables, and I'm glad I did. Both drives are now up and running without a hitch. br>br>So, if you buy this drive, don't rely on the cable that comes with it. To go with it, I recommend getting a good cable. I deducted two stars as a result of this.

APPLICABLE TO MAC OPERATING SYSTEMS ONLY! My 2012 Macbook Pro is up to the task
5/5

Amanda was kind enough to share how to format this for a modern Mac. Her instructions have been slightly updated, as follows: Disk Utilities is a program that can be used to clean up your hard drive. Select "Show All Devices" from the View menu. "br>On the left side of the window, select WD Elements. br>Right-click and select "Erase" from the menu that appears. up menu. Create a name for your project and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" if you have a current vision of OS-X. In less than a minute, it will reformat the drive. br>I was able to complete this task with ease after following these instructions. This serves as a Time Machine backup disk for me. When my computer is on my desk, I keep it plugged into the USB hub to which I connect it. I see from the reviews that some people have experienced disk failures, but I also do a cloud-based backup. backup that is based on But that only saves the most recent version of each file; Time Machine saves hourly backups for the previous 24 hours, allowing me to recover anything I've accidentally overwritten. br>br>I had been using an old Synology 212 for Time Machine, but after I moved, it asked me to reinstall, crashed in the process, and I lost all of my data. In that case, RAID is useless. I considered purchasing a newer, faster NAS, but the cost is prohibitive, so I've decided to stick with this solution for the time being. This won't do backups when I take my laptop away from my desk, unlike the Synology, which could be accessed via WiFi, but I do my most important work at my desk anyway. br>br>I chose this over the newer, $5 cheaper version because I prefer rounded edges to sharp edges. The rough surface does not appear to show fingerprints, which is a problem that users of the gleaming newer version have complained about. I am ecstatic that 4TB can fit into such a small form factor and be so reasonably priced.

Does not work with the File History or System Backup features in Windows 10
3/5

Because Windows 10 recognizes the drive, you should be able to manually move files from your primary drive. What it won't do is support the only reason I bought an external hard drive in the first place: File History and System Backup are two features in Windows 10 that you should take advantage of. Windows insists on using an external drive or a network location for some strange reason. It will not allow you to back up to an internal hard drive. The issue is that it also does not back up to this drive automatically. It begins with- It adds a few configuration files to the mix- It could be an issue with this WD HDD and Windows naming conventions, as the file simply stops with no actual data on it. Windows doesn't like long file paths (which is one of the reasons I can't use OneDrive because I never know which files are in which subdirectories). sub- will be excluded), and saving files to this external HDD lengthens the file path even more- As a result, every file, regardless of whether it's labeled "a" or "b," will be ignored. That is a no-no. If the HDD doesn't work with File History or System Backup, it shouldn't be advertised as compatible with Windows 10. Being recognized by the system is a good start, but that isn't why I'm doing this. I can use one of my two internal hard drives to perform manual file dumps. It's not worth the effort or the time.

Memory for the PlayStation 4 My boyfriend was the recipient of this purchase
5/5

His PS4 was happy with the 4TB external hard drive. He claimed that some of the memory was used for conversion, but that he now has 7 times the amount of space he had before. He is very pleased with this product, and I will update my review if he encounters any issues. br>br>Update the layer for the past two and a half years. Everything is still up and running!.

USERS OF THE MAC - TAKE ACTION! **PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS ONLY FOR MAC OPERATING SYSTEMS! After receiving two "failed" drives, I contacted customer service to find out why I couldn't troubleshoot using any of the online tools and get this to work on my Mac! The solution appeared to be ridiculously simple, but I couldn't find it in any of the forums I searched
4/5

The problem with erasing/formatting on a Mac is simply due to the Disk Utility view you've selected. Make certain to select View. Show All Devices, then "erase" the top-tier drive to resolve the issue.

Heaven is 2 TB
5/5

SO. SO. I'm so happy I finally bought it. I've been looking for something like this for my PS4 since the 500GB drive was no longer sufficient. I had to go through the process of deleting games I had previously played in order to play new ones. Now that I have the space, I can decide whether or not to leave it there for a while. br>br>On the PS4, setup was SUPER EASY because it already had the formatting settings. Not only that, but the formatting was done quickly. It's a huge relief to know that I now have so much more room. What's the difference between 500 and 2 terabytes? I'd say that's a good leap. Finally, the price is within my budget for what I was looking for. I didn't want to spend too much money, but I knew I wanted quality. Due to my roommate, I was aware of this external hard drive. He got it on Black Friday (which I totally missed out on; I'm sorry I did it) and it hasn't caused me any problems. I had the opportunity to buy it for myself, and I was able to do so at a reasonable price. br>br>Overall, I would strongly recommend it!.

Death by a click
3/5

The first drive died as soon as it arrived, with a click of death. Because failures happen, I decided to give them another chance. I returned it to Amazon and received a new one. The second drive lasted less than a week before it, too, died *click* *click* *click*. I got a refund after returning it. br>br>Two failures out of two drives is far too many for a third attempt.

This is the ideal Xbox One complement
5/5

The Xbox One X is simple to set up. I purchased the 4TB model. I figure that between the external drive and the 1TB on the machine, I'll be able to store 35 4K HDR games, which should last me several years, and I'll have another USB port if I need more expansion in the future.
