Questions & Answers

When there are only two ports, how can you connect up to 256 hard drives? Also, should I get this instead of the 9305-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 24i 24- I only have 14 hard drives, so I don't have access to a port. ?

A total of eight SAS/SATA devices are connected to each port. The model number ends in "8i" as a result of this. So, if you need to connect 24 devices, the 24i is the way to go.

Do the cables come with it?

It does not include cables, which is likely due to the wide range of cable lengths available. I also purchased this cable when I purchased mine: http: //www. amazon. com/gp/product/B000HVXCXO/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01? com/gp/product/B000HVXCXO/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01? UTF8 ie=UTF8 ie=UTF8 ie= psc=1 . There is a low-cost option available. However, there is a profile shield.

This is the ideal card for a housewarming gift
5/5

FreeNAS storage server was built from the ground up. High- 8- No-frills performance SAS controller with multiple ports For FreeNAS, LSI boards are the industry standard. It's well-supported and reasonably priced. I didn't have to re-install anything because this one only supports "IT" mode (no RAID), so I didn't have to. It's being flashed to the best ZFS image. I installed it in a PCIe slot on my motherboard and connected the two SAS-equipped drives. I connected my new drive array with SATA breakout cables (sold separately) to the card. FreeNAS booted up and recognized the controller as well as all eight attached drives (which are all mapped to /dev/sd). , i. SCSI drives that are generic). So far, it's been a great performance. I use GELI to encrypt my ZFS pool at rest, so I believe the AES-based encryption is the current I/O bottleneck. My Core i3 CPU's NI performance. However, I can easily maintain a write throughput of over 100MB/s, which is more than sufficient for my needs.

JBOD is simple to set up
5/5

I was in need of more drives for my SSD software RAID, and this fit the bill perfectly. Everything was plug and play, and the trim worked on the SSDs, so it appears to have shipped in "IT" mode. Windows RAID and Storage Spaces both worked fine after switching plugs between this and the motherboard sata slots. Even with a GPU using the other x8 (both an X470 and a Z77), it worked without any tweaking in every x16 slot I tried. Even the chipset slot performed admirably.

It is compatible with unRAID
5/5

NOTE: A picture of an LSI Logic SAS 9207-A was on the box I received. Despite the fact that the sticker on the box said 8i, it was actually 8e (note the "e" at the end instead of an "i"). This concerned me until I opened the box and discovered that it was the correct card (internal SAS ports as opposed to external SAS ports). My guess is that the manufacturer doesn't bother printing separate boxes for each variant of their cards and instead relies on stickers to distinguish the different models. br>br>I bought one of these for my unRAID server (version 6) and it works great. 8) Because my motherboard only has 6 SATA ports, I'd like to connect more hard drives. I stuffed it into an x16 slot, which felt strange with an x8 card, but it seems secure enough with just the backplate screw. There is no need for configuration, and there doesn't appear to be much you can do in the BIOS of the card. That makes sense if you're only going to use it as a SAS/SATA (non-IDE) drive. One of the SAS breakout ports does not lock the cable in, and the cable came loose after installation, preventing half of my drives from showing up on the first boot. br>br> I wasn't about to pull the card and cable out to figure out which was at fault because I'd just spent a lot of time routing data and power for 12 total SATA devices, so I didn't dock a star because it could be a problem with the third-party cables I purchased. When the cable is plugged into the port, it works fine; however, it does not lock into place as it should. If you never move the machine or fiddle with the cables inside, it's not a problem.

Be cautious when using firmware version 20 and Linux software RAID
3/5

With mdadm and Ubuntu 16. 04, I had major problems with this card. 04 LTS with the firmware version 20 that comes with the card. After migrating an existing clean mdadm array to this card, I/O errors caused all of the drives connected to this card to be marked as failed. It turned out to be the ver 20 IT firmware that came with the card, rather than the break out cables I was using. I used the efi flash method to update it to version 19 IT, which involved erasing the card's flash and then reflashing it with the older firmware and BIOS. My I/O errors appear to have been resolved as a result of this. After a quick Google search of my problem, I discovered that other people are having similar issues with ZFS and other Linux software RAID setups, as well as the ver 20 firmware that comes with it. If you plan to use this card with Linux software RAID, double-check the firmware version on your card, and I strongly advise you to downgrade to version 19 before using it with your array.

There is no need to flash because the computer is already in IT mode
5/5

This is a fantastic card for adding more SATA drives to your computer. I did a lot of research and discovered that the card doesn't need to be flashed into IT mode, and it has enough bandwidth to connect up to eight drives without affecting transfer speeds significantly. Mine is in a 16x slot, so with the graphics card in the other, I have 8 lanes for this card. Windows 10 recognized the drives right away and didn't require any drivers. In addition, mirroring two 4TB drives was a breeze for me. These are the first drives I've connected to the card; if I get the second mini SAS cable, I'll be able to add another six. A total of four drives can be connected to each mini SAS port. This card has two mini SAS ports, so make sure you get the right cables; to connect SATA drives, you'll need mini SAS to SATA. I used a mini SAS to four SATA cable from CableMatters.

It had the desired effect
3/5

It was still necessary to update the firmware. Be aware. This IS going to work with FreeNAS. U5 BUT. There's a chance you'll get a message saying "iucrc error detected. " If you do, you'll need to update the firmware on this card. I won't go into great detail in this review because I'll be re-writing it in the near future. Flashing should only be done after you've been educated and are willing to take the risk. Keep an eye out for tutorials and make sure you're using the correct firmware. You will require the package "9207_8i_Package_P20_IR_IT_FW_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows. " My card had firmware version 20 installed. 00, and freenas began to throw iucrc errors on load almost immediately. I suddenly found myself at the age of twenty. Everything is fine at 00 a. m. Please be aware. br>br> Please re-br>br>researchbr>br>re-br>re-br>re-br>re-br>re-br>re-br>re Risk your life by flashing. br>br>If you're not sure about flashing, "The Art of Server" has cards flashed to the correct firmware on his website and eBay store. It's nice to have a brand new card, but there are times when you just want something that works. I paid a premium in the hopes of having no problems, but instead I had to re-install the card. flash. I'm glad I was able to resolve my issues, but I could have saved money by using eBay. br>br>You have been informed.

I got this for Unraid, and so far it's working out well
5/5

I wasn't sure, and after reading a lot of reviews, I decided to give it a shot. I decided to go ahead and do it. I had a list and everything, so I went ahead and did it. It appears to have already entered IT mode, and it's pcie3. 0 I took a screenshot of the sas2flash information and posted it there. br>br>Creative+ paraphrase: After a week, this card is still performing admirably in unraid, and I also flashed it to IR mode for use with Windows Server 2019 and it performed admirably. However, I switched it back to IT mode because the built-in raid in Windows is terrible, and unRaid is fantastic for running a storage box.
