I'm sorry, but this isn't true. The two rods are attached to each other. The setup I use depends on what I am trying to accomplish. I use both a hand held and a shoulder setup. In the previous configuration I preferred more flexibility (motion of the camera), but after a while it gets tiring.

A little noisy, I know, but it is very nice. I am sure of the build quality, and that is the most important point. In the event the pad is worn out, it may be easily replaced. It does not seem to be an issue to me.
