It is a great idea! This product has one weak link in the form of the tripod. This isn't a complaint against the company since the tripod is often the weakest link in any optical setup. There is no benefit to adding wheels to your tripod or why a tripod with wheels is needed, since orienting objects is much simpler when a stable base and a spotting scope are used... Yes, and you should use them! Although the tripod is a weak link on this product, that shouldn't be a reflection on the company, as the tripod is typically a weak link in any optics setup. There is no particular reason for your tripod to have wheels; I don't know how they would help you; orienting objects is easier with a stable base and the spotting scope attached along an axis, but still, I say go ahead and do what you want.
If you need the part, then you should be able to order it. Rather than returning the whole item, you can simply return the defective part.
You can decide how steady you want it to be by choosing how much you will be able to hold. Feel free to experiment to find a solution.

It is easy to assemble, and the included adapters are easy to add to the telescope If I were to use this app, I wouldn't look for galaxies or star clusters far away or try to locate a binary star (or two) But I would use it to take some aerial shots of the moon using your smartphone As well, I would not try to find the flag on the moon However, you will see the craters and other details on the moon more clearly than you would with binoculars (see my pictures) As part of the package, it comes with backpack storage for the stand and scope, which is protected with foam Kids will love the height and there is a reasonable amount of height adjustment available using the pretty steady latch It was a great way to show my nieces and nephews the moon since they loved looking at it The process of getting this up and running shouldn't take long since there are only a few joins and it's ready to use to be expected, the entire setup is a bit shaky, so you have to be careful not to move the telescope too much, especially when using your phone camera to capture what you are seeing
Let me set your expectations in a reasonable range right now The thing is not going to be able to count the rings of Saturn or anything like that It is more of a beginner telescope intended for kids who have a special interest in the moon and maybe birds All of the equipment that comes with it is decently constructed, including two eye pieces, a tripod, and a backpack As far as the telescope itself goes, it is also decently made In general, it is a good gift for kids, but it may leave you disappointed if you are buying it for an adult
