Questions & Answers

What's the difference between a Barlow and a focal extender?

It's almost the same thing. There is one distinction that Explore Scientific provides. We maintain the 2X magnification when used directly in the focuser tube, whereas others increase magnification beyond the designated magnification. Example: When ES 2x is used directly in the focuser tube, the magnification remains at 2X. When used in a focuser tube, many other brands have magnifications of 3X or higher. When used diagonally, all brands, including ours, maintain a 2X magnification.

What is the total number of elements used by the 2x?

This focal extender comes in two sizes: 2" and 2" with four glass elements.

How are things going for you? How well does it function?

My recommendation is to visit the Explore Scientific website, as they have a wealth of information on this product. My experience is limited because I have this product packed away due to our impending move.

Is the focal extender threaded so that it can be attached to a t ring? This is something I can do with my current barlow lens, but I don't see any threads on this focal extension?

On my Lunt 80mm solar telescope, I use my focal extender (2x and 3x, as needed) with my ZWO Astro Camera. Threads are not required in my case, but there are threads on the inside (not outside) of the FE barrel just before the first lens - 4 or 5mm is most likely.

This is a fantastic Focal Extender
5/5

I've read mixed reviews on this focal extender, and some of the negative ones make me wonder if some of the end users fully comprehend how it works. I bought this to extend the focal length of my Explorer Scientific AR127 Telescope, and it worked perfectly with the eyepieces I already had. When I first tried to use this extender with my DSLR, I had focusing issues and quickly realized that I needed to move the extender about 1 inch away from the telescope's fully mounted position in order to get my DSLR in focus. Despite this, I was able to ensure that the extender was firmly in place. Similarly to a teleconverter on a telephoto lens, the focal length doubles and the F stop drops in half, reducing the amount of light available. In my case, the F stop apiture on my telescope is f-. It's now an f-type with the extender. To compensate for the loss of light, I have to increase the ISO and slow down my shutter speed on my DSLR. I was, however, able to get some incredible TACK SHARP photos of the moon and other objects I photographed with my telescope. If you want to double the focal length of your telescope, this extender is a great piece of glass that will do the trick.

Excellent Optics, but Use Caution When Setting Up
5/5

The quality of the construction is astounding - The machining is beautiful, and the coatings are excellent. The 1. The 25 to 2" adapter itself is quite nice, with a nice brass compression ring and undercuts to help prevent eyepiece drops. It does an excellent job of what it's supposed to do, but there are a few caveats I'd like to point out.

- This is a HEAVY item. To get a dobsonian to balance, you may need to add extra counterweights. With this and a 2" eyepiece, your focuser may require extra tension if it is particularly sloppy.
- It's possible that you'll require more out-of-the-box thinking or in-the- travel with a sharp focus Return or get extension tubes as needed if you test your set up right away.

Extender of excellent quality
5/5

Extender of excellent quality. The construction is of very high quality, and the optical quality is excellent. It's big and heavy, but there's a lot of glass in there. This is an extender, not a barlow, so keep that in mind. The difference is an additional optical element: an extender's light rays are parallel, so the magnification remains constant at 2x regardless of distance. A cone-shaped barlow is the most common type of barlow. The magnification varies depending on the distance between the barlow and the eyepiece or camera. I wanted the same 2x regardless of where I put the extender in my imaging setup for astrophotography. As a result, everything went as planned.

But it's not worth the money
4/5

Bear in mind: This will only work if you have good to excellent visibility in your sky. Otherwise, you'll be teasing the limit of your scope by stretching the f/ratio. Hold off on buying it if you know it will be a problem based on previous experience. Choose one of the following: 1. 5X, 2X, or 3X is the number of times something has been multiplied. However, if you want one for your collection, go ahead and get one.

5x Barlow lens is fantastic
5/5

Solid construction and good optics (I'm no expert, but I can clearly see the Cassini division). This Barlow lens fulfills all of my expectations and then some. It's been a fantastic addition to the planetary viewing experience, especially for Saturn and Jupiter. I mostly use it with my 25mm Plossl (on an Orion 130ST EQ), which provides me with similar eye relief and magnification as my 10mm Plossl with the 2x Barlow. If I need to get even closer, I stack the 2x and 5x Barlows with the 25mm Plossl for a total magnification of about 260x. There's a clear view of the moon's craters as well as deep star clusters. I'd purchase from this company again because it was well worth the money.

Barlow's upgrade to the focal extender is excellent
5/5

When I use high magnification, the light transmission is excellent and there is no loss of eye relief. I'm donating all of my other Barlows because this is the best I've ever had.

Investigate a 3x focal extender that is scientifically proven
5/5

a significant step forward from traditional three-part barlows- chromatic distortion and coma at the periphery have been reduced- In addition, the price is very good.
