There are certain microphones, such as lavalier mics, which can operate using a TRS plug as opposed to a TRRS plug, but it will not work with certain computers or other devices. To give you an idea of what each plug type is, there are three different types TRS, TRRS, and TS. It should be noted that this adapter is designed for using a TRRS type microphone with four conductors (3 rings and one tip) in a standard TRS 3 conductor mic jack, whereas the standard plug has only two rings and one It allows me to plug in a lavaliere microphone on my desktop PC, which has two separate jacks along the front, one for the MIC and one for the headphones. I am using a microphone with an adapter of a similar type that worked fine, but it was rigid, a single solid piece, which caused it to protrude out of the front of my computer and made it much more vulnerable to damage. With this one, I replaced the one I had since it has a small length of flexible cable with a connector at each end, which is FAR more effective than the rigid piece I had. Although it functions the same, the physical manner of the system is far cleaner and neater, and far less likely to cause damage. I highly recommend this product, because it appears to be well constructed and works fine.
