FINALLY
5/5

The software is a little wonky, but that's to be expected; getting it synced to the Switch was a little strange, but that's what instruction manuals are for (though if you want to skip it, hold Y and Start, then hold the sync button for 3 seconds, then go to change grip/order), but I literally only bought this controller for one reason and one reason only--to play with my Switch. The Dpad. br>br>All I wanted was a good controller with a good Dpad, as the previous model was too small for my hands. This is exactly what I was looking for. It also works on PCs. It also has the sultry 8bitdo retro look. Even if you don't have a Switch, this is a VERY good option if you need a better Dpad for 2D platformers, fighting games, or Tetris. br>br>If you don't have a Switch, but you need a better Dpad for 2D platformers, fighting games, or Tetris, this is a VERY good option.

This will make a connection with the switch
5/5

The directions that come with it are very specific, so read them carefully. I'm not sure what the other two reviews are talking about, but it connects to the Nintendo Switch and functions flawlessly. I'm in love with this controller; I've been playing Hollow Knight and Smash with it, and the controller is incredibly responsive, with an excellent dpad for Hollow Knight. Hold the y button with the start button for three seconds AND THEN hit the sync button if you're having trouble connecting the directions in the box. On your switch's menu, select Change/Pair Remotes, and boom, you're connected right away. Don't hold off on purchasing it. I'm considering getting another one. The only feature I wish it had was the ability to connect to my PS4 so that I could use it exclusively. This is without a doubt the best controller I've ever used, so it's well worth the money! If you're reading this, 8bitdo, there's one more thing I'd like to point out. It might be a good idea to make the text on the controller grey or white. Because of the black on black, it was a little difficult to see where the button letters were. Aside from that, the controller is flawless.

It doesn't have the feel of a third-party controller
5/5

Let's start with something that has nothing to do with my score, but may be of interest to those considering purchasing this controller. br>When my controller arrived, it didn't appear to be as new as they said it was, at least not in the box. The box had some minor shipping scratches, but the inside had some dust and other lil' bits of debris from what could have been a previous owner or a refurb place. It didn't appear to be refurbished because the controller itself appeared to be in perfect condition, with only a few odd bits of dust and particles on the plastic covering. br>br>Now for the review that has a direct impact on the grade: br>First and foremost, get the ultimate software for this from the 8bitdos website; it allows you to easily update and modify parts of the controller for PC and POSSIBLY Switch use. I haven't done much with this and my Switch, preferring to play on my PC instead. It's critical that you don't overlook this, as one of the updates expressly states that it'll help with controller lag when using the Switch with the Joycons attached. If I read one, that's a HUGE update. br>br>Now for my personal experiencebr>After a quick 10 minute check to make sure everything was in order, I spent about 4 hours on PC playing Monster Hunter World with Rando's. It doesn't feel like a 3rd party controller, it feels like a proper 1st party controller, which is strange because I'm used to the XB1 rev1 and PS4 controllers. Controllers for the Wii U Pro This controller feels like a strange hybrid of a PS4 and a SNES controller. In no way is this a bad thing; it's just strange in the hands, if that makes sense. br>br>There are several modes that the controller can operate in; for the most part, you'll want it set to XInput because that's the industry standard; by pressing start X, it'll boot into that mode. To switch, press and hold the start Y key. If you're changing the device with which it's paired, you only need to do this. If you've already synced it, all you have to do now is hold start, and you're done. br>br>The buttons and sticks feel solid, and I had no issues with Monster Hunter aside from my hands feeling like they were holding a Nintendo controller. A XB controller is being used to play this game. Each of the buttons, as well as the sticks, felt responsive. There was nothing here that I could find to be critical of. The triggers are analog, so they'll provide you with the responsiveness you'd expect on a PC, and they'll work fine on the Switch despite its lack of analog. br>br>I played a bit of Freedom Planet on Switch (10 minutes or so), which can be taxing due to the fact that your attack/special inputs can change a lot depending on your dpad inputs. I didn't notice anything here; the dpad felt fine, I didn't go in a random direction when using specials or attacks, and there was no noticeable delay. I've put over 150 hours into this game because I enjoy it, so I believe I'd be able to spot something particularly noteworthy. br>br>There is a USB port on the controller. The controller can be charged with ease using a C charging cable with a USB3 jack on the other end. And, unlike the PS4 controller, if you don't want to use the included battery pack, you can open the battery cover, remove the battery pack, and replace it with your own. I did this for my first test run because I didn't want to wait for my controller to charge. br>It worked great; I can't speak to battery life in this review, but I'm sure it'll be fine given that it's essentially an XB1 controller in terms of functionality. I'm confident that this is better than a PS4 controller with PC in 90 of ways than a PS4 controller with PC in 90 of ways than a PS4 controller with PC in 90 of I've used that controller on PC before and it worked fine, but most games would require third-party drivers, which actively told me I had lag despite the fact that I was only 2-dimensional. Distance from the adapter should be no more than 3 feet. the PS4 controller's battery life, even when third-party apps dim or turn off the bar's brightness- The batt life remained abysmal. I'm confident that this will perform significantly better. My MD30's battery life seems absurd. br>br>The grips feel better than they appear in the photos; they appear to be slapped on to make up for the complaints about the regular SN30 controller, but they actually felt pretty nice, resembling the grips and sticks of a PS4 controller with a SNES as the base for the controller's face. br>br>I've seen some complaints in the reviews, but to be honest, I don't see those problems. I found some low-cost My computer has an ASUS adapter, and my switch is about three years old. I was 5 feet away from the controller with direct line of sight and experienced no lag or problems connecting them. It took about ten minutes to update the controller. Working on a PC using xinput, and the switch took less than a minute. You don't have NFC on the Switch, but I doubt that will be an issue for most people. br>br>The short version: Do you need a controller for your PC or Switch but don't want to spend a lot of money on a Switch Pro controller or a XB1 controller wireless adapter? br>This should suffice, as neither device requires an adapter (*PC WILL REQUIRE SOME FORM OF BLUETOOTH OR JUST WIRE IT) and neither device has any limitations. br>The software and controller options are extremely robust; it's a pleasant controller to use, and I didn't notice any lag at all. ever. br>br>This isn't one of those cheap madkatz controllers; it feels like a first-party controller with the flexibility of not being tied to any platform. It's simple to switch between PC, Switch, Android, and iOS with a small button combo. I've done pretty much the same thing with the MD30 controller and a PC. It was fantastic to switch. This appears to be a reflection of what you've gone through.

Because of poor design decisions, a lot of potential was squandered
3/5

I've had it for about a month and use it on a daily basis. This is where my journey comes to a close. Hardware- It's a hit-or-miss situation. The rechargeable battery, which can also be used in place of regular batteries, is one of the most popular features. As a result, there is virtually no downtime in between charges. The DPAD is also far superior to the Switch or even the Dualshock 4 controllers. It also emulates the latter's layout, which is a huge plus for someone like me who prefers the playstation layout to the xbox layout that most controllers in the wild emulate. Because of the DPAD's superiority over the latter, it is well-liked. DPAD is best suited for fighting games, where it will see a lot of action if you prefer to fight with a controller. In Blazblue Cross Tag Battle, where I use the DPAD a lot and its design hurts my thumbs, in addition to slower inputs due to the disjointed nature, my fingers preferred the SN30's DPAD over the DS4's. The hits, on the other hand, come to an end at that point. The controller shell, on the other hand, attracts dirt and feels cheap in my hands. While the buttons are responsive, they are prone to becoming stuck. When I press a button, I frequently hear a delayed depress, indicating that the action did not occur immediately. It hasn't gotten in my way yet, but I'm afraid it will only get worse from here, which is a shame because I heard that this problem was supposed to be fixed in this improved model, despite the fact that the previous model had the same issue. However, prior to receiving this controller, I received two lemons in a row, so I'm not sure if this is another lemon. The rest of the problems, on the other hand, are unrelated. br>br>In terms of wireless capabilities, it delivered on its promise and connected to everything I threw at it. There were only two of them: Despite the fact that it worked on both my PC and Switch, There were no issues on the PC side; connecting and using it was as simple as connecting my Dualshock 4. Connecting it to my Switch, on the other hand, is a major pain. First and foremost, unlike other 3rd party controllers, it is unable to wake the Switch from its sleep mode. As a result, before I can use the controller wirelessly, I must first wake up the Switch with my WIRED controller, after which I can begin pairing my Sn30. However, whether it will succeed on the first try is a gamble and a game-time decision. depending on Games that only support one controller connection at a time, such as Bayonetta 2, are an example of this. will cause a major headache because, unless the SN30 is Player One, it will turn off and become unusable as soon as the game is launched. To fix this, go all the way into system settings, select controller settings, and pair the SN30 from there, ensuring that it is identified as Player One. Then you can play with the Sn30. Nintendo, not 8bitdo, is to blame for this behavior. The inability to wake the Switch is definitely 8bitdo's fault; the only reason I have to go through that is because the SN30 can't wake the Switch, forcing me to keep my WIRED controller plugged in, which means it'll always be the first controller to be paired once I wake it up, which means it'll always be Player One, which means I have to go through this every time I want to sit down and play a Switch game, which is frequently, with the frustration mounding This problem would not have arisen in the first place, and the blundering design choices don't stop there. br>br>The 8bitdo Ultimate Software, the SN30's killer application, is a godsend when it comes to playing games where you don't have complete control over your controller layout (the number of such games on the switch is way, way too high, but I digress). Any button can be mapped to any other button, multiple buttons, or none at all. There are even macros and turbo boosts that can be assigned. There are no limits to the number of combinations or profiles you can create. Just make sure the number of profiles isn't more than three, or you'll run into issues. The Ultimate Software user interface, as you can see, is a disaster. If it opens at all (it sometimes crashes on startup), it always opens dead center in the middle of your desktop. The lack of ability to resize the window, along with the requirement of having a PC nearby to use it, isn't a major issue. Because of this, as well as the complete lack of a scrollbar, some options are simply not visible, especially since there are no scroll bars at all. Why did I say that you shouldn't have more than three profiles? Because you can't scroll through the list, you can only see three profiles at a time, and the third isn't even visible, it's only half-complete. visible. As a result, profiles four, five, six, and so on will be present in the program's installation folder, but you won't be able to access them because you won't be able to scroll through your list of profiles. The only way to access the additional profiles is to DELETE profiles so that it has no choice but to show the one you want, as I discovered the hard way. You can sync your profiles to your controller and they'll work as expected until you need to call upon another profile. br>br>You see, you can only have one profile loaded onto your controller at a time, so if you're playing Smash Bros. If you want to play Bayonetta 2 with your smash profile, you must first connect your controller to your PC (it will not work if you connect the controller to your PC wirelessly), load the software, hope the software doesn't have a graphical bug that requires restarting the program, load your Bayonetta 2 profile, sync the profile to the controller, and then begin playing Bayonetta 2 (after you complete the system settings). settings for the controller Of course, this is nonsense in a pair. Let's say you've had your fill and it's time for Breath of the Wild; you'll have to do it all over again. And then there was Mariokart, and then there was Smash, and so on. Also for any other game for which you've created a profile. If we could load multiple profiles onto the controller and have it load a specific profile when a specific game is launched, that would be fantastic. Alternatively, we can cycle through our list of saved profiles and do it ourselves. As a result, this unnecessary headache would be completely eliminated. br>br>If 8bit had not dropped the ball so badly, this could have been the holy grail of switch controllers; when it works, it works great. The issue is that even getting it to work takes a long time. They made strides and even mentioned that they worked to reduce downtime when it comes to how the battery works, but any time you might have saved there is completely overshadowed by the amount of downtime you'll have between changing games, let alone taking a break from playing games. When you add in the graphical bugs, crashes, and design decisions that necessitate ridiculous workarounds, you have a controller that has so much potential but isn't being given the chance to shine. What's even more tragic (and perplexing) is that they initially postponed the release of this controller, only for it to end up looking like this. this. br>br>Now, I'll continue to use it because the ability to change my controls and play wirelessly is too valuable to pass up, but the aforementioned issues mean that there will always be some frustration, and that frustration will always make me wonder what could've been. It'll also make me think twice about buying an 8bitdo product in the future.
