Although I am not certain how Amazon was able to discover its error, I got my refund in September, so it is a freebie of sorts. As far as I can tell, this splitter has been more reliable and fidelity than the previous ones I had. In the past, rigid splitters, such as those shaped like a Y or U, were considered to be the best kind. There have been 10 or 12 splitters of variable quality that I have used. It allows you to take one audio source and split it into multiple outputs. So if you have a phone or laptop, you could plug the male end into the device, and you have two pairs of headphones, you could plug them in the two female ends so that each person can listen independently. It will not allow you to go in reverse. Alternatively, you could split the source into the two separate speaker units or headphones and speakers, etc. Thus, you can't connect two microphones to a computer to hear them.
