Questions & Answers

Is the cable included in the enclosure, or do you have to buy it separately?

It has a USB 3.0 port. Both ends have a 0 "A" cable. According to the instructions, it had a USB 3 Micro-B connector. On the enclosure side, there is a B connector (two joined connectors). The USB 3 A is preferable because it is backwards compatible with USB 1. x and 2.

Will this house be capable of a 1T drive?

I have four of these, each of which houses a 1TB Western Digital Hard Drive 2. Drives up to 5 inches

Both the aluminum and the plastic "tool-box" enclosures are listed on Amazon. In the same batch of reviews, there was a "free" one. Which is the better option?

The aluminum enclosure is something I purchased. There are two small Phillips head screws in it. I don't think I'd want to switch to the "tool-only" mode for the price I paid. enclosure that is "free"

Would it be able to take 7mm 2? 5 HDD?

I'm not sure what a standard 2 is like in terms of thickness. Yes, tt will accept a 7mm 2. 5 " HDD, but I believe the size is standard. 5" HDD.

Selected User Reviews For Sabrent [Upgraded Version Support UASP] Ultra Slim USB 3.0 to 2.5-Inch SATA External Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure [Black] (EC-UK30)

It's an enjoyable drive, but the design has a significant flaw
4/5

It's a fantastic enclosure for your hard drive. You can't go wrong with an aluminum bodied, slim base for less than $10, right? The speed of the adapter is adequate. I tested the same hard drive with an Orico enclosure and saw slightly faster read/write speeds of 10MB/s. When I first plugged in the drive and placed it inside the enclosure, it would detect on my computer but then disconnect; later, I'd try again without the body and the hard drive was detected and worked properly. The issue was discovered to be two leads extending from the USB controller on the underside of the PCB. Because it was an aluminum body, it shorted out when placed inside the enclosure. br>br>I solved the problem by covering the usb controller's leads on the back of the pcb with electrical tape. Since that time, the drive enclosures have been performing as expected.

Disconnects and writes that hang on a regular basis The manufacturer's quality control is shoddy
3/5

It has a USB 3. 0 port. I was sent an A to Micro Type B cable, which means I can't connect anything to anything: 0 Type A Jack, and is supposed to come with a male A to A cable to connect the drive to your PC, media station, etc. For some reason, I was sent an A to Micro Type B cable, which means I can't connect anything to anything: Very dissatisfying, and strange to say the least. On this thing, there isn't a single Micro Type B port! br>br>If and when the manufacturer or Amazon sends me the correct cable, I'll be sure to update my review. The casing is lovely, and it appears to be quite durable. The only other criticism (which is reasonable) is that a 2. Within the casing, the 5" drive rattles. You can prevent this by cutting a sliver of foam from the item's inner packaging, but it will still happen. br>br>**UPDATE 6/7/2017*
I've been using this enclosure for about a week now and have a few thoughts. To begin with, Amazon has without a doubt the best customer service in the industry. They quickly resolved my issue, and I now have the proper USB A cable. I need a cable to use the drive because, as I previously stated, there is a lot of wiggle room inside the enclosure, which is bad design all around. If you don't cut foam to insert after the drive is installed, it will wiggle and thunk when you move it around. I've also had multiple instances on multiple PCs where the drive would suddenly stall or freeze, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the drive in order to regain access to folders. I swapped the HDD to make sure it wasn't faulty, and it appears the problem is with the enclosure's data port. Although the enclosure is attractive and slim, it is poorly designed, and the quality assurance is lacking. If you don't want these niggling issues, I recommend looking elsewhere because they have a significant impact on your quality of life. br>br>**UPDATE 6/19/2017*
I want to thank Manny from Sabrent for reaching out to me and sending me a replacement drive. The replacement drive arrived with the correct USB cable, and it has performed admirably. If you don't use the foam method I mentioned earlier, the rattling problem will still exist, but the enclosure will be solid otherwise. I appreciate Sabrent's customer service team for making things right; they have solid integrity. br>br>**UPDATE10/20/2017br>Okay, I've been trying to look past this enclosure's flaws because of how great their support team was and how beautiful the enclosure is, but enough is enough. I've never had a device connect and disconnect on its own before in my life. When you're in the middle of a game, how do you save your progress? Because the device is stuck in limbo, the whole program hangs. Are you trying to open a folder? The folder is going in and out of existence, causing Windows Explorer to crash. The lack of friction in the enclosure is still an issue if you don't already have some foam, and the wild disconnects are beyond belief. I thought perhaps my drive was going bad, but lo and behold, putting it in an alternate enclosure fixed all of those issues; the lack of friction in the enclosure is still an issue if you don't already have some foam, and the wild disconnects are beyond belief. Avoid this drive at all costs; instead, spend a few dollars more for an Inateck enclosure and you'll be fine.

It was fantastic when it worked
3/5

WHEN IT DID WORK. This was purchased as a low-cost replacement for a 500GB SSD that I had on hand. The internals connected to the SSD as if it were going into a real computer, which was a fantastic solution. The fit was a little fiddly, but with so little movement and motion planned for this HD, I didn't mind. It served as a backup for Lightroom behind my laptop. br>Creative+ paraphrase- It is no longer working in November. I assumed the HD had crashed or something, but when I tested it with a different cable, it was fine. It's a problem with the guts. br>I don't have the time to fiddle around with it. Although the concept is sound, it is poorly implemented. Of course, I'm past the deadline for returns and exchanges.

Buy something else if the construction quality is poor
3/5

I don't usually write reviews for products that I don't care for. br>prob. The worst enclosure I've ever bought. br>It's a huge let-down. br>This enclosure convinced me that plastic enclosures have come a long way, and I no longer want to buy aluminum enclosures. Because the cover appears to be bent, the screws do not exactly line up. br>The screws themselves aren't ideal for long-term use. br>It doesn't appear to be damaged, and the packaging isn't either, as far as I can tell. br>I'm going to assume the one I got isn't particularly noteworthy, and that the majority of these aren't particularly good. The cover is made of very cheap plastic, while the main body and back cover are aluminum. br>For $9, I didn't expect much. 99, my expectations have been lowered. I was able to force the cover onto the frame by using some spare torx screws from my parts bins. br>br>Once my replacement arrives, I'll give it away with a small drive in it. br>I wasn't willing to waste calories processing a return for the price. br>br>To make it work, Windows needed to install drivers, which I dislike for a variety of reasons. br>Seems to work out of the box with Linux and OSX, with reasonable file transfer speeds. br>br>I came across a 2. An online auction site sold a 5" enclosure for $5. br>For $7, it appears to be quite nice. 98, I'll probably update my review once I get it. br>I've included some photos of how this item appears in natural light.

Despite its tough exterior, the design and construction are shoddy
3/5

Despite its tough exterior, the design and construction are shoddy. A hard drive enclosure is a fairly basic and common piece of hardware. The case is made entirely of extruded aluminum and is finished with two end caps. br>br>However, it was the USB 3. 0 port that irritated me and drove me to return it. 0 cable. It's a type A that can be used both sides! I've worked with computers for a long time and have never seen anything quite like this. That means that if it is lost or damaged, replacing it will take time, and I need this for travel. I'd be screwed if I misplaced or broke the cable while driving. Male type A to male micro type B cables are used in most other enclosures, and they're widely available.
