I used Seagate 8TB enterprise drives, which are fantastic! I use the 12 bay version in a Raid 10 configuration to share storage between two high-performance MAC editing stations. My Synology NAS is fantastic! This took the place of a DS1815 that was used as a backup. I purchased the 8-pack each time. In the future, I may need to expand the bay unit. It costs a lot of money to start a business. However, it allows me to purchase hard drives with smaller capacities, so I believe it is the best long-term option. term. br>br>With this review, I'm not sure where to begin. Only once have I required their assistance. The DSM operating system is fantastic, and it's the main reason I chose a Synology NAS over a competitor's. I use it primarily as a file server, and it's replaced several external hard drives. I'm also running a few applications with the built-in Docker support. I purchased third-party RAM from Amazon, which was much less expensive than purchasing the NAS with the maximum amount of RAM (installation was simple). br>br>Upgrading from a DS1815 to a DS1817 was a breeze. I swapped out the old unit's hard drives for the new one. It booted up without a hitch. That is all there is to it. Synology has released several major upgrades to DSM, all for free, since I purchased my first NAS. In between major upgrades, they've also been quick to issue security patches. These updates are simple to install, and DSM will notify you when they become available. br>br>I can't say enough about how much I like it! If you're interested in a NAS, a Synology server is a good option.
In conjunction with my 1byone antenna and HDHomeRun Quattro tuner, I purchased this to serve as a storage location for my Plex server. I had four Seagate Iron Wolf Pro drives, one of which was DOA, so I had to RMA it and get a new one. A 5-year warranty is included. My server is a Ryzen 7 machine with 16GB PC3200 RAM running on an X470 motherboard. br>br>The user interface is attractive, simple to operate, and extremely reliable. Expandable up to 216TB with up to two optional 5-drive expansion devices (with 12TB drives) and 96TB with no RAID parity (with 12TB drives). I'm using it with my drives in an SHR1 'RAID,' which provides single-drive fault tolerance (think RAID 5), as well as a hot spare, making it similar to RAID 6, but not quite. I gave it 16GB of RAM, which I've never used more than four times before, and four 12TB hard drives. It didn't take long for me to realize that wasn't enough, so I added a 5th drive to the pool, and thanks to its SHR capability (a feature that distinguishes it from traditional RAID), I was able to create a new 'RAID' pool without having to break and rebuild my RAID. I could also use my NAS while the restriping was going on, though not with six devices. This is fantastic! I can't emphasize enough how much better this is than traditional RAID. br>br>On the original 4 drive 'RAID 5' (SNR1), with hot spare, so really only using 3 drives (as the parity is striped), I was able to stream the same movie on 4 different devices, at different points in the movie, pause/play/rewind, whatever you wanted, as if they were all individual discs in your players. These included a Roku-enabled TV, an iPad, and two cell phones, all of which used Plex apps. 4 devices watching the same movie at the same time with no lag or stuttering, it was flawless! br>br>This NAS has made my life so much easier. It could, after all, be less expensive. But, hey, you get what you pay for, right?.
The configuration interface on the web is very user-friendly. The NAS is well-designed and responsive, and it comes with a large number of native applications. Many network ports, the ability to add a large number of drives, and the ability to use an external expansion enclosure option if needed in the future are some of the major selling points for me. The speed has pleased me. I'm only using two of the ports, but they're both performing well. br>br>In comparison to my previous Seagate, I prefer the email notifications on this unit. This one provides notifications for firmware updates, general system status, drive capacity, and a variety of other options, in addition to power events and potential SMART failures on hard drives. With a clickatell account, you can receive SMS notifications, though I haven't tried them yet. br>br>It's a lot easier to upgrade the RAM on this one than it was on the previous model - The enclosure has only one door at the bottom.
As a SAN/NAS Storage Administrator at work, I find that this product has many of the features that I look for in the enterprise-class NAS (Network Attached Storage) arrays that I use and recommend. br>br>I've already recommended it to a few friends, and a few of them have bought it and are very happy with it. br>br>The eight disk drive bays give you a lot of options for expansion before you have to replace your disk drives. br>br>Add in all the add-on software that can run as virtual machines on this, and you've got yourself a fantastic home NAS array. br>br>I strongly advise you to go with SHR- RAID level 2 should be used. It's the most adaptable and provides the highest level of uptime in the event that a disk drive fails. It's worth noting that replacing a 6TB drive can take up to a day. If you don't already have a spare, you'll need to factor in shipping time when calculating the rebuild. All other RAID levels can only withstand the failure of one drive. If a second drive fails before the replacement is installed and the device has finished rebuilding, you will lose all of the data on the device.
To begin, I'd like to express my regret for not purchasing this earlier. br>br>The build quality is excellent, and upgrading it right out of the box was a breeze; I replaced the fans with Notcua nf-series fans. f12, which are incredibly quiet, as well as increasing the RAM to 16GB. br>br>The dsm is a gold standard that is simple to install. 15- Installing the hard drives, installing the dsm, and creating your disk group all took less than 30 minutes from start to finish. You're good for a day or more depending on the size of your HDDs once you've started the disk grouping process. After the disk group has been created, you can begin configuring your NAS. br>br>I can't express how simple the process was once you got past the price tag, but to be honest, that thought lasts far less time than you might expect. br>br>Purchase it now instead of thinking about it!.
