Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use 18TB drives in these NAS units?

Although they are not officially supported (according to the Synology website), people are using them with no problems. Because hard drive manufacturers use base 10 measurements rather than base 2, the drives appear to be 16. The storage capacity is 4 TB.

I'm looking to migrate a five-disk raid-5 on a Thecus NAS. Is it possible for this unit to continue without thecus' disks?

You could certainly use the same disks, but I'd back them up first before transferring them to the synology. The EXT4/Btrfs file systems appear to be present on the synology and thecus nas, but I'm not sure if the volumes could be imported directly.

On 220, does it work?

My DS1621 is plugged into a 120V outlet. The AC Input Power Voltage can be set between 100 and 240 V, according to the specifications. I haven't tried changing the input power, so all I can say is that it works fine on 120V.

Are there any other 10GB cards available for the DS1621 and DS1821? Because, in my opinion, the synology is overpriced. ?

This was suggested by another reviewer, so good luck. 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) - Look for Mellanox ConnectX-related terms on the internet. 3 MCX311A MCX311A MCX311A MCX3 XCAT LOW PROFILE is a plug-and-play device that costs $45.

Selected User Reviews For Synology 8 Bay DiskStation DS1821+ (Diskless), 8-bay; 4gb ddr4

Excellent, dependable, and quick; $250 in upgrades is recommended to maximize performance
5/5

The DS1517 has been replaced. It is extremely simple to upgrade. A lot quicker. More space on the hard drive Aside from that, the construction and quality are identical. Stock ram is insufficient. br>br> For those on a budget, here are some unofficial upgrades to consider (though keep in mind that Synology has official supported hardware if this is important to you):

- RAM: 32 GB Depending on the manufacturer, there may be a compatibility warning, which you should be able to find out about. To see a list of RAM with and without warnings, Google "DS1821 and/or DS1621 ECC Ram Upgrade Options. "
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) – Look for Mellanox ConnectX-related terms on the internet. 3 MCX311A MCX311A MCX311A MCX3 XCAT LOW PROFILE is a plug-and-play device that costs $45. br>br>With regard to nvme cache, a word of caution: It isn't required for the majority of users (including myself - It's not something I use! Users who run virtual machines at home may benefit. Only use official Synology nvme cards or Optane for a cache if you're serious about it. Consumer nvme cards WILL inevitably and prematurely die, resulting in data loss (look it up). DSM7 will improve nvme cache, but I don't recommend using it until later this year when it becomes stable.

Segate IronWolf Pro Nas 12TB drives are not compatible
3/5

2YM101 has an incorrect firmware version. In a brand new Synology DS1821, I installed 6x12TB IronWolf Pro NAS drives. The warning that these drives are not in the Synology compatibility list appeared when I created a new volume; however, these drives models are in the compatibility list, but not the latest firmware 2YM101. Synology Support was unable to assist. "Use at your own risk," Synology customer service advised. Seriously, how is a customer supposed to check the Firmware on a hard drive before purchasing it? The segate drives are updated to the most recent version. br>br>You'd think that because Synology and Segate market these two products together, they'd work well together. Manager of Storage - > HDD/SDD- > The issue is not resolved by updating the compatibility list.

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS! THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS! br>br>So far, I've set up my Synology with seven 8TB drives
5/5

I used all 32GB of available memory. There are two M's in my collection as well. There are two SSDs in there for cache, and SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) is installed. It's very smooth to operate. br>br>Before I got this, I was simply JBODing everything on external hard drives and had duplicates of almost everything, with the exception of a few things that I had started to organize and others that I simply copied. I think the 8 bay was a little excessive, and I could have done with a 6 bay instead, but I'm still satisfied. br>br>Synology's software is simple to use, and I've never had a problem that couldn't be solved with a Google/YouTube search. br>br>I was able to go through my files and perform file deduplication. It's a little tedious at first, but the end result is well worth it. br>br>I've only scratched the surface of what this thing can do, but I want to make sure I have all of my files organized before I try anything else.

It's a bad mix

You just hope there aren't any problems with the product after the warranty period has expired. They'll suggest that you purchase a new server.

This is a huge improvement
5/5

This is the fourth time I've completed an eight-week program. Since 2014, Synology DiskStation has been used to store data. My previous one was a DS1817, which came with two 10-foot cables. Gigabit Ethernet (RJ45) ports, and you can bet I aggregated those links on my (extremely expensive) Ubiquiti US-based Ubiquiti US-based Ubiquiti US-based Ubiquiti US-based Ubiquiti US-based Ubiquiti 6PoE, with a 20-person crew. Between this and my main FreeNAS server, I have a gigabit connection. br>br>Well, I wanted to set up a secondary Plex server to take some of the load off of my primary FreeNAS, but the DS1817 didn't have an x86-based chipset, so Plex wouldn't work. I purchased the DS1821 and have been living off of it (until now). connections with a gigabit aggregate But it's the DS1821's capable AMD Ryzen quad-core processor that really shines. In terms of NAS performance and Plex transcoding on the fly, the DS1817 pales in comparison. I pulled out a few BluRays and tried uncompressed dumps to the NAS for playback on Plex, and it handled them and seeking surprisingly well. The 1821 is perfect for me. I wish it had at least two SFP ports for connectivity, but it does have PCI-Express. E, plus NVMe cache drives, more RAM, and an expansion card, for a total of ten. Gigabit Ethernet, more NVMe, or a combination of the two. I went with an Intel X520-based computer. DA2 to re-establish 10 gigabit connectivity, and the Synology discovered it almost immediately with minimal configuration (aside from increasing MTU). Hooray! br>br>So, if you're looking for a powerful, small-form-factor NAS with expansion capabilities, the DS1821 is by far my favorite 8-bay NAS. So far, this is the best bay I've used. I'm excited to see what new models have in store for us in the future!.

Powerful, quick, flexible, expandable, and simple to operate
5/5

My DVD and Blu-ray collection. I decided to rip all of my Blu-ray discs to a media server because they were getting too big. I chose this model, the DS1821, after conducting my usual internet research. Synology's expansion capabilities, in particular, impressed me - Rather than purchasing a new NAS, I'd like to be able to add additional drives as needed. Since the day I received the Synology array, I have been completely satisfied with it. The user interface is fantastic, and the system comes with a large number of applications that can be installed for a variety of scenarios. The DS1821 supports DLNA media hosting (via the "Media Server" application) as well as SMB sharing, making it compatible with a wide range of players (I use Infuse Pro). The unit is quiet enough to be used as a media server in a home theater room (though this will most likely be dependent on the drives you use). Only one quibble: Although the NAS comes with 4GB of RAM, I recommend that you upgrade it - On Amazon, I was able to find compatible Arch memory.

You should get a Synology NAS if you want the best NAS
5/5

I now have three of these, which I proudly display in the corner. They're fantastic; I use them to store all of my data and couldn't be more pleased. They run on a lot of DSM software, and the SHR raid volumes save me a lot of time and effort.

My second NAS, which will take the place of my 9-year-old model
5/5

To replace my 1521, I purchased this. The show is on another level entirely. Now that CMS is enabled, I can use it to manage both of my NAS devices from a single location. It's not difficult to set up. Because I'm switching from an ext4 to a BTFS file system, I didn't use the migration feature. It's simple to migrate and move files.
