Questions & Answers

Is it possible to increase the amount of memory?

No, it's not possible. The 512 MB memory limit on the DS220J is set in stone. Synology's own notes state that the current software upgrade requires at least 1 GB. This model and brand should be avoided at all costs.

If only one drive is installed at first, the second drive will be added later. Is it true that raid 1 is set up? or do both drives have to be installed at the same time?

I initially installed one drive and later added a second. The Raid 1 drive on the second drive was added automatically.

What physical hard drive sizes are acceptable?

5. It's possible that Firewolf is wrong. In the 1980s, 25" HDDs were no longer manufactured. I'm pretty sure they meant 3 when they said that. 5" HDD's. br>br>And everyone else who responded didn't even bother to read the OP's question. PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL SIZE, PHYSICAL SIZE PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL SIZE PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL SIZE

Is it possible to use it as an esxi or backup VM datastore?

Although technically possible, it is not advised. Because the CPU and memory were not designed for this use case, you will almost certainly get poor performance. For a datastore, 512MB RAM is extremely low. Traditional file sharing and media streaming are the primary goals of this model. The DS218/DS218 is a good choice because it has a faster CPU and read/write caching.

Not a NAS, but a horrible Fluffy Bunny Cloud Storage Thing I wish I had the ability to assign a rating to this - Five thousand stars br>All I need is a box into which I can place some hard drives and then mount them on my PC via ethernet
3/5

Normally, such a device is referred to as a NAS (Network Attached Storage). I made the mistake of thinking this abomination was a NAS when I purchased it, but it is not. It's some kind of fluffy cloud access device. I was under the impression that because it's called a NAS, I'd be able to ATTACH it to a NETWORK and use it for STORAGE. Nope. br>Wait, I had to download and install the operating system on my hard drive? I had intended to install drives that already contained partitions and data. I'm not going to reformat my hard drive and install some obscure operating system I've never heard of. br>After that, I can't get it to create a volume on the formatted drive. br>Perhaps if I figure out how to make a volume, I'll be able to connect to it via ethernet. Over the internet, no way. That fluffy bunny stuff is completely useless to me. br>If you just want a fluffy bunny cloud storage device and aren't concerned with anything other than "oooo, I can access my files from ANYWHERE!" "Then this thing might be for you (I didn't test that part, so who knows?). This is the WRONG device if you want local NAS storage. If you want to put standard formatted drives in it, it's the WRONG device. If you don't want to fight it constantly to make it do what you want and only what you want, it's the WRONG device. I've never been so disappointed with something I've purchased on Amazon. I'm planning on taking it out tomorrow and shooting it. It could be a good target.

The WORST NAS on the market! This product was delivered to me on Sunday evening
3/5

I was greeted with a brief instruction leaflet when I opened the box, which gave me hope that the installation would be simple and straightforward. I was completely incorrect. br>br> br>br>So, after 4 hours and 1 manufacturing reset, I was able to get the NAS up and running. Synology sprinkled the usual feedback and tracking options, which I normally decline, but what I didn't expect was the NAS to CRASH when I chose not to participate in the final selection during startup, which combines acceptance of their online crap with acceptance of their EULA. As a result, I had to reset the NAS, accept their BS, and then go back in and uncheck their tracking nonsense. The NAS was finally configured four hours later. Day two. br>br> br>br>After the first night, I became more concerned because I began troubleshooting and noticed additional performance issues. I set up a continuous ping test between my mac and the NAS after installing the NAS OS (after refusing to accept their tracking BS the first time). It's worth noting that there's only one hop, which is through my router. Even so, packet ping times ranged from 500ms to nearly 7 seconds on average! My dead mother can move packets faster than that, Synology! Please note that I also tested other nodes on my network, and they all returned normal ping responses (less than 1 millisecond). Also, the NAS is connected via terrestrial Ethernet and is set to 1GB (as described in the numerous articles I read). I also connected a second node to my router's ethernet port to make sure that wasn't the issue (it wasn't). Regardless, as day two progressed into the evening, I was able to get Time Machine to work with two Macbook Pros. The backups would start and then stop this time. I initially mistook this for a Time Machine issue and spent the rest of the evening troubleshooting it. After exhausting all other possibilities, I decided to leave things alone because, according to one article I read, initial Time Machine backups take longer than most people expect. So, after another late-night troubleshooting session, I went to bed and resolved to check again the next morning. br>br>Day 3br>br>Backups, as expected, were ineffective. During the night, only 1 GB of data was transferred. However, there is a new feature; I'm unable to access the NAS anymore! It gets to the login screen and that's all there is to it! I figured a couple of power resets would solve the problem, but no way! This is a Synology NAS, and nothing is that simple. br>br>I've owned NAS devices in the past, and while I understand that they aren't fast, this is complete nonsense. Synology should be embarrassed to be associated with this shite. I'm going to take this NAS apart and return it today. br>br>I hope my review convinces others not to waste their time or money on this product; if you value your time and money at all, avoid it!!.

This is a fantastic little network attached storage device
5/5

It's probably the simplest computer/server configuration I've ever attempted. Open the box, put the drives in, close the lid, plug it in, turn it on, and run the setup file. done. Over my 1Gbs home wifi network, I get very fast access and write rates. I'm very pleased with the unit and the numerous features I didn't realize were available when I purchased it, such as remote NAS access built into the DiskStation Manager (DSM). br>br>According to my home Sense power monitor (yeah, that's a pretty little box too), the unit is drawing about 12w while accessing the drives, so it's a low-power unit, especially with two Barracuda drives. Standing 3 feet away from the unit, there is no audible sound, so it's also quiet. br>br>The hardware and software integration is excellent. This book comes highly recommended.
