Questions & Answers
It connects via ethernet and accepts NAS-rated hard drives.
It appears that it does not have a switchable external power supply.
Logic volumes, not physical drives, are mapped to Windows drives on the Synology. It all depends on how you set up your Synology, but it's fairly straightforward.
There are only two bays in this vehicle. As a result, you'll only be able to install two disks.

We had a bunch of old external 2. I bought this NAS to replace them. There are a lot of 5" drives that aren't being used. Rather than plugging each one in separately to back up our data, I figured we could put four of them into a NAS and access the files from anywhere (and on any device). My goal for this NAS is to use it as a central storage location for family photos and videos, as well as to potentially store all movie files on it to stream to our TVs via Chromecast. br>br>I have two 1TB drives and two 500GB drives in my setup. One of the 1TB drives was a thicker model, but it fit in the drive bay without the need for any NAS modifications. I used the default settings, which combined all of the drives into a single volume using SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid), giving me 1. Total storage capacity is 81 terabytes (TB). SHR allows for one-drive fault tolerance in this configuration, which means that if one drive fails, you can replace it without losing any data. This data protection, in my opinion, is a good tradeoff for having less storage space available (i. e. 3TB (no data encryption). br>br>So far, I've only used the web interface to upload files to the NAS, which is a simple drag-and-drop operation. Synology Photo Station Uploader is a tool for uploading photos. The difference between dragging and dropping photo/video files to the NAS and using the Photo Station Uploader comes down to which system creates thumbnails and preview images. Using the Photo Station Uploader generates these files using your computer's hardware, which is much faster because your computer's specs should be much higher than the NAS' CPU/RAM. The only problem is that the Photo Station Uploader software isn't very reliable, and it won't upload all of the files you've selected. For example, if you select 50 files to upload, it will likely upload 30 of them while returning an error for the remaining 20. Then you'll have to choose the same 50 files and upload them again, with the option to skip previously uploaded files. It's possible that only 10 of the remaining 20 will be uploaded this time, so you'll have to repeat the process to get the remaining 10. Apart from that, I haven't had any other problems with the system, but I haven't spent much time with it aside from uploading files. I'll update this review once I have the movie streaming setup.
For traveling, it's perfect. First and foremost, it pales in comparison to my desktop-sizedbr>DS916; however, it is ideal for travel. On wifi, I was getting terrible transfer speeds of 10MB/s. But that's a conversation/investigation in and of itself. On Win 10 with SMB2 as the minimum and SMB3 as the maximum protocol, I get 100MB/s, which is perfectly acceptable given the 512MB RAM and Marvell dual-core processor. core 1. CPU speed is 33 GHz.
This is my third unit; it performs as expected but will not last long after the warranty period has expired. Make certain to get the extended warranty.
With its functionality, this unit is extremely powerful. It comes with native support for NFS, SMB, and AFS. br>br>Finally, an alternative to Apple's Time Capsule has been discovered.
For a backup appliance, performance is more than sufficient.
This product is easy to install, and the Synology website made it simple to determine which of their products I required for my environment.
The product is defective and will not stay on all of the time. I contacted Amazon, who sent me an email in which I could express my dissatisfaction. Nothing; There was no reaction. The equipment from Synology is usually excellent. Their poor service, on the other hand, is a disgrace!.
Tech support was terrible, and the product didn't work as advertised. br>If the product worked as advertised, they could sell billions of dollars worth of home service.
