Questions & Answers

Is it possible to install Nextcloud without using Google Drive, Dropbox, or other cloud storage services?

Yes, you can use the NextCloud app that you can get from App Central. All other cloud / syncing services, such as Dropbox, will only work if the app is installed. So, in your case, all you have to do is install NextCloud.

Is it possible for a virus to infect Nas because we download and install software from outside sources?

This is a Linux-based machine that is safe to store your files if you take some simple precautions.

Is it possible to use this as a raid 1 network storage for Mac without any additional software (proprietary for the NAS)?

Yes, you can set up the NAS and use it solely for storage; the rest of the NAS's features and apps are optional.

Is it still possible to update the firmware?

It is, as far as I am aware. The most recent update took place on October 20, 2020.

The speed with which Windows Map Drive copies data is sluggish
3/5

Yes, I am aware of Windows. When mapping a drive and using Windows Explorer, however, the copy speed should not be as slow as Rip Van Winkle. I'll play around with it for a while to see if there's anything I can improve on. However, if you're looking for a simple NAS device that allows you to drag and drop files from Windows clients, this isn't it.

On the internet, you are invisible
3/5

I suppose I should have read the product description before purchasing. When they say "home," they really mean it. I tried several times to set it up as a WAN and it was unable to do so. It's a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. The LAN unit in the house. The cell apps are fine, but as I previously stated, it is impossible for family members in other areas to locate the unit using them. None of the IP addresses, including the WAN IP of the unit, are functional. There is little to no tablet support; Google Apps has a lot of them on a phone, such as AiFoto, but try finding them on a tablet. I bought this machine to use as a Private Cloud for my family, some of whom live out of state or even out of the country. Nope. They can't see it because it's invisible to them. It's also a snail's pace. I have a large family photo album that took hours to enter, much longer than uploading to Google Photos. Overall, I'm dissatisfied with ASUS's performance with this device. I had hoped for more from them because they are a reputable company, which is one of the reasons I purchased it. It's at best cheesy, and I've exchanged it for a unit from a different company.

My NAS is only a few days old, so I can't speak to how well it will hold up over time, but I am very impressed so far
4/5

I used two 3TB Hitachi drives, and the sync took about 18 hours to complete. I downloaded Plex and Subsonic from their App store and copied all of my old media from my old external drives connected to my RPi3, and I was up and running again within 24 hours of unboxing. br>br>It also comes with a three-year warranty, which I hope I never have to use. However, the best I've seen on a NAS is three years; most others are only two. If you're looking for a low-cost NAS with fault tolerance, this one from Asus appears to be the best of the bunch. So far, my only complaint is that I don't believe I'll be able to expand the RAM in the NAS. Plex and Subsonic both eat up half of that even when idle, so 512 MB isn't much. As a result, if I ever want to integrate my Wyze cam local storage to save to the NAS in the future, I may run into RAM issues.

I've been using this NAS drive for a few months now and it's great
5/5

It was quick and painless to install the drives and set up the system. I had no problems with the initial software upgrade, and I can't speak to capacity because you buy (and install) your own drives. I installed two WD Red 4 TB drives in RAID 1 configuration. Advantages: br>br> br>* Quietbr>* Very fast (compared to my old MyBookLive)br>* Access to mapped drives from our laptops was simple; very dependablebr>* Works seamlessly with Windows backup/file historybr>br>Can't think of any significant drawbacks, except for the fact that it's a bit priceybr>br>Can't think of any significant drawbacks, except for the fact that it's a little priceybr>br>Can't think of any It's possible that a technical user would have some difficulty. However, the setup instructions were excellent, so you should be fine if you pay attention and read them carefully.

Definitely a new kind of user interface! The good: This was simple to set up with a pair of drives in redundant RAID, and it works fine
3/5

With a Cat6 gigabit Ethernet connection, transfer speeds are adequate. The price is excellent, and the case is simple to work in and on. br>br>The Bad (or, perhaps, simply different): If you've ever set up a RAID server before, you'll know what I'm talking about. You'll think the interface is strange! It's a system that runs on "apps. " Perhaps once I'm used to it, I'll enjoy it a lot. FOR THE TIME BEING, however. All I want is for all of my Windows machines to recognize the drive as a NETWORK DRIVE so I can easily map it. I was able to gain access to the site with relative ease. br>THIS SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK (! It'll be recognized as a network drive, and you'll have to map it with one of the proprietary apps. That is incredibly inconvenient. and strange!.

I placed a new order and paid for it
3/5

It was either returned or used. I was able to obtain one that had been previously used. Alternatively, one that has already been opened. I'm going to return it and get my money back.

The NAS was not found by ASUS Control
3/5

Installed a hard drive, downloaded and installed software, and connected to the router, but the software was unable to locate the NAS. The router was shared by both the computer and the NAS.

When the old one died, I went out and bought a new one that looked exactly like it - seamless
5/5

This model belonged to me, and my family and I relocated across the country in it. The disks inside the NAS were fine, but the NAS itself was damaged. After doing some research, I discovered that the only way to get back up and running in a safe and timely manner was to purchase the same NAS. And it was successful. We inserted the disks, waited for it to boot up, and it remembered all of our data, as well as its name and mapping configuration, and we were on our way. RAID1 should be rebuilt from the ground up. Should mention that it worked flawlessly for four years before we relocated and jostled it.
