Questions & Answers

It has a USB 3.0 port. Will I be able to access this via USB 3.0? The USB port on this device has no use for me since I want to use it as a video source drive. Can I plug it into my computer?

There is no way to do it. USB ports are used to connect the EX4100 to additional storage and to transfer data between the EX4100 and other devices. The device cannot be directly connected to a

Is it possible to defragment the NAS using western digital tools?

It might be possible to enable SSH and log in to the drive through a terminal, but I haven't tried it myself. In most cases, this can be accomplished by running apt-get and installing a defrag tool that can run from the same command line. Assuming it is the same as MyBook Live (which is most likely the case), the username will be "root" and the password "welc0me" (that is a zero "0", not a capital Unless it's running Microsoft Windows, it's probably running some flavour of Debian Linux. Therefore, look for Debian-compatible defrag tools.

Do you know if this will also work with the red pro ?

It is possible to use the red pro drives

By connecting another WD NAS (ex2, raid 0) by its Ethernet port will I be able to gain access to the other WD NAS? Are they going to When I install Windows 10 will I be able to see them?

Both devices can be connected to a switch so that you can access them from the same It is not possible to raid an EX2 from a device. An external USB hard drive (such as MyPassport) can be connected to the USB 3. The back of the model has no slots for expansion or backup. The system backup feature is the only option available for backup.

Driving is awesome, but there are times when it is frustrating

Easily setup and easy to operate, this electronic device is a great addition to your home entertainment system. It can be configured in many RAID modes, including JBOD (Just a bunch of drives) for maximum storage capacity. After setup, everything seemed to work and was easily accessible from most places. As soon as the problems began, they multiplied. There are periodic disappearances of the drive from my network. The problem has been brought up by many people and a number of fixes have been My first reaction was to turn off Sleep mode since I thought maybe that was contributing to the issue. As well as giving them a Static IP, I gave them a Static DNS. I still have about 3 to 4 occasions per week when the drive disappears from my Network no matter what settings I tweak. Until I unplugged the power supply and let it reboot, the only way I've found to get it back online is by allowing the PC to reboot My drive usually comes back online in about 5 minutes if I do this. It continues to be online until it decides to run away and hide once It's kind of disappointing to see Western Digital unable to address this issue, since they are a company that usually does address this type of concern. The firmware on this drive has been updated by WD three or four times since I purchased it. However, this has not happened yet and I am hoping they will find the problem and fix it in the near future. I believe that this problem could have been fixed long ago, given the high price WD is asking for this drive. Other big drives from different companies are not much better, so I don't know how they compare. In conclusion, I bought a drive that was exactly what I wanted and needed for my system however, if I had to do it over, I would have bought a smaller setup that, by the reviews I have read, seems I have had a WD Cloud drive in 4TB for many years, and it's been rock solid. The only thing I would like is WD to make this more expensive drive work, too However, I don't think it does!.

A compact and fun little NAS for the prosumer market (4GB) Is that it?)

In this review you will find information on WD's EX4100 (4-inch) In order to merge reviews from the two platforms (Amazon and Ebay), Amazon has announced a design change The bay and the four The Bay. EDIT
In my experience after using this product for 6 months, the following information stands out 1. In the "drive failure" notice, the disks are not inserted into the drive. Several ways can be taken to mitigate this effect. 2. Plan periodic downtime. You continue to be limited by the speed of your HDD and your network connection when you write data. 1. 2. 3. They are still not doing a good job of documenting WD and they are still over-charging The support of a group board is crucial. 4
In order to enable dual-use Gigabit ports should be bonded, and 802. 11 should be enabled. This is 3AD. Five points. We do not recommend using personal or older Because it is more stable and has a longer lifespan in comparison to the 7200 RPM drive, the 5400 RPM WD RED drive might be the right option for you. In that case, you might want to choose the WD Black. This is 5. It is important to mention that the EX in The purpose of it is to serve as an indicator for those who do not have a lot of technical knowledge I think that this is a bit more than a plug-in The solution is "plug-and-play". This is the original review *First and foremost This device is not as straightforward as some other types of devices designed to be used at home. For any Enterprise Solution that you buy (which is why Product D features EX for Expert), you will need to devote a lot of time and effort to setting up and managing it. This is not the right option for you if you want everything to work without you having to do anything more than click "next" during an installation wizard. As result of running a spare PC as a media server for a while, I decided to purchase this NAS. I purchased an 8TB WD Red drive separately as it was less expensive than the bundled version of the EX4100. maximum amount of storage this solution can handle is 32TB, which is equivalent to four To the best of my knowledge, I have decided to run JBOD for the time being, while also making An instruction guide is included in the box with an effective period of just As the person setting it up, you (the person setting it up) will navigate to WD's website to access the necessary setup instructions. A ticking noise from the hard drive every 5 seconds was one of the issues I encountered. It is normal for their enterprise drives to reach this point in standby mode, according to WD's website. Despite the fact that most Enterprise systems are rather noisy (as is the case in general) The device may not be able to operate without power, and this may impact where you wish to place it.

You will need to wire it to your router (assuming you are using a router/wifi This is a It is possible to transfer data over Category 5 cable (Network or Ethernet Cable sold in stores) at speeds up to 10Mbps, but at 100Mbps it is likely to be less likely if the cable is more than a certain distance (or if you neglect to factor in As a result of the cable I use, I have a 90Mbps transfer rate. It translates to a bitrate of 11MBps, which is especially important to keep in mind since files are measured in byte containers, not bytes (8 bits are equal to a byte) Unless specified otherwise, a 700MB file would be 5,600Mb. As part of the package is a Gigabit cable, which is (by necessity) 3 In this case, the speed is 125MBps, but one has to consider all other segments of transport as well. Analogously speaking, here are the parts of a car While stuck in gridlock, a Bugatti Veyron will not be able to travel 200 mph. I recommend connecting a device to the USB drive on the top of your NAS if you plan on transferring a lot of files from an external device (such as a portable HDD) onto the Go to the control panel of your computer by clicking on the icon. By using the "backup" feature of the NAS, you can instruct the NAS to copy files from relevant folders on the external device into the NAS location where you want them stored. This eliminates any need to use a network or computer for the copying process. Additionally, you can use the backup feature to create an automatic backup of critical files to another location if you choose to use this feature. Regular use, when you need to copy a couple of small files at a time, implies making use of the fileshare (via your computer's Network Discovery). I am concerned with the device's control interface, since it is my biggest concern with the device. This method uses a standard interface on port 80, and does not support connections over port 443 (HTTPS). You can log in and manage your devices through this function. It is possible to enable SSH once you have set up the device, but that will not change the issue mentioned previously. Also, you can attempt to do things that will have a high probability of failure - for example, installing Plex Media Server if you do not have any I like that this page has a timeout option. However, I would not recommend this device for working in an enterprise environment. Plex users should refer to the following page When it comes to direct streaming, this device does well. You will need to rename the files. This can be either the MP4 file (the container) or the If you are playing the file in MP4 or mkv format and are using H264 or H265 as the video codec and AAC, MP3, or FLAC as the audio codec, you should be able to play it. As AVIs are not supported by Plex (as they may cost money to license), nor do they support DTS passthrough, so the Media Server will attempt to transcode them. You cannot play such files on the server if using the EX4100. It does not have the horsepower to transcode, so such files will not work. It is possible to use a more powerful device (such as your computer) as the server, and host the files on a network attached storage device (NAS) You can also convert the files into direct play format using tools such as Handbrake. Generally, I like the product. My observation is that it does a decent job of balancing Enterprise functionality with home-user features. There are requirements for usage. In addition to the cost and installation requirements, there is a lackluster support package In my opinion, the biggest problems with this device are the lack of documentation, and the lack of any standard network security protocols.

Despite being a good product only printed on paper, this is a limited edition. There are several issues that I have with this product that really make it useless in my opinion. First of all let me give you a quick background on me. I am a network engineer and I manage and configure networking products on a As a result, this SAN is not stable when it is connected to the In other words, you cannot access the dashboard or the unit for the first few days due to the dashboard being unavailable from your network and remotely. After that, you cannot access the unit from any connection point, which means you cannot connect to the dashboard. There is a physical power button on the front of the unit but it does not do anything regardless of how long you press it. The bad part of this is that all the information on the little blue screen on the unit indicates everything is working fine. This seems to be a case of the unit just hanging and freezing. Disconnecting the power cable is the only way to reset a spinning disk product, and disconnecting the power cable is really not something I want to do to such a product. In this case, I made a mistake of not returning the item in time, thinking that I could In case you are experiencing this issue or are thinking about purchasing it, all of the solutions that are on forums online, such as setting static IP addresses and doing system restores will not fix the problem. The WD support agent took my call and instead of trying to troubleshoot the problem, they are going to return it to me. The thing that really pissed me off was they told me they would pay for shipping one time as a courtesy. Is it basically true that you sell faulty products and I have to pay for the return shipping? Do NOT buy anything like this. That is absurd. Save your money and do not buy anything like this. * * *- In my recent conversations with WD, I have now called about 8 times to get one simple pre-order There is no payment for a shipping label on this defective product from 2017. WD's servers are down and they can't provide even the simplest label. There seems to be a delay of over a week before they can Please save yourself time and money by staying away from this company. It's one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with especially when it comes to customer service. There are some companies I wish I could give 0 stars to.
