In the worst case scenario, the unit shuts down if the disk is full
3/5

A total loss of data has occurred. This is hard to believe, but it is true - when the NAS runs out of disk space, it locks up. You cannot access the OS or There is only one option for you, to do a complete RAID format and install. This would mean that there is NO data left. A warning or safety measure is not present in the OS. As of September 2018, this is with the latest firmware 4. If you want the hard drives to be recovered, Buffalo Tech Support will tell you to send them out to a third party! The only solution they can come up with is that. I am doing a return on both the units I ordered from Amazon at the moment. Thanks to the fact that it happened when the units had just been purchased, I can hope to purchase something more normal in the near future.

There is something wrong with this device - it is way too slow. We've been on the phone with technical support for weeks now trying to get it to work. But now the computer is so slow that it's no use at all. The firmware crashed as soon as I attempted to update it. A CAT5e cable was used to connect the device directly to my computer, however the connection was not secure. They told me I had to contact the vendor I purchased it from if I wanted to return it, and guess what? They said I'd have to contact the vendor first. In addition to Amazon, they don't accept returns! Junk like this is not welcome in our home. Space is wasted with $800 of useless technology. It wouldn't do any good for computers, so I may as well make it into a fish tank or something. BUY THIS IF YOU CAN AVOID IT! I have updated As it turns out, MacBooks have a notorious problem with NAS hard The indexing of the folders and the creation of thumbnails needs to take place every time the folder is opened. Therefore, Apple is partly to blame for the slow performance of this drive. Although this product actually worked over the WiFi, it was still difficult to use because it wouldn't work. You would probably want to use another program if you are a Mac user.

I found the TeraStation 3410DN to be an excellent purchase for my home NAS system
5/5

Setup the Buffalo TeraStation 3410DN Desktop 12TB NAS with Raid 5 as a replacement for my older NAS. The TeraStation has been on my list of things to buy for a long time. Prices have not dropped since my last appearance bashing it. I had no trouble setting things up. The NAS was discovered by DHCP, static IP address was set and firmware was updated after it was plugged in and turned on. About 20 minutes into the firmware process, I was beginning to think that it wouldn't finish as described in one of the reviews, however it did, it just took longer than I expected. Came with WD Red NAS drives rather than the green ones. It has iSCSI capabilities, which is great for my Win10 PC, since I can use it to back up my data (without NAS mapping), and I will test it with various Server VMs, for example SQL server, where iSCSI drives might be needed. During the review on the workload, I set a reminder to email me when the capacity is less than 10% otherwise, there will be an error message. I have arranged for 4 to be transferred. In a few days, I have loaded up a few old portable USB drives with 5TBs of data, and the transfer rate was You do not have to wait for it. There can be one or two if there are many small files I see a speed of 20MB/s when the files are large, and 30 MB/s when they are smaller Over the past few months we have experienced peaks of 70MB/s and 100MB/s With 110 MB/s. The overall performance was good considering it was a gigabit Ethernet connection. In the case of a fancy home network switch that supports link aggregation, you can team (port trunking) both 1Gbe ethernet links into a single 2Gbe network. It is too bad that I do not have a switch like that at home, but the 1GBE is still great in general. My TeraStation has also been set up to backup my DropBox and OneDrive data through the built-in cloud storage feature on TeraStation and it is working flawlessly. It's not perfect, for instance, the remote management app for an android (I'm not sure about the iPhone app) needs some improvement. You must learn two different apps in order for it to work, but it does work once you get the hang of it. If you are looking at reviews for this product, please keep in mind that I'm an IT expert, and I'm of the opinion that this NAS is worth a.

I'm not sure the drives are up to snuff, though
3/5

The convenience of having this kind of storage available on my local network is great. It has allowed me to rip my entire media library to it and use Kodi running on a Raspberry Pi to watch movies. I've found it's brought movie night to a whole new level of relaxation. I like how easy it is to set up and create shares with access controls, and I like how easy the interface is. However, I would prefer a default that won't automatically create Apple shares because it creates a bunch of garbage files that can't be used by What really bothers me, however, is the fact that it was exactly 3 weeks after I received it and set it up that drive 1 was detected as having an error, causing it to be removed from As a result, I was able to rewrite This is a NAS drive that is supposed to have a high level of fault tolerance, so we should be able to detect it, add it back, and rebuild the RAID array, but 3 weeks is still too soon to have an error. There seems to be debate about the use of shingled magnetic recording on HD Red drives, unless the recent articles are to be believed NAS arrays cannot be used with them, making them useless. As of now, I am keeping an eye on drive 1 very carefully and I will be contacting support at Buffalo with a few very pointed questions if there is any further trouble.
