Questions & Answers

Is pfc still used in Carhartt's rainproof coating? Because it has been discovered that it is poisoning everyone, much of the industry is now experimenting with alternatives. ?

I'm not sure what kind of coating it has, but it's completely waterproof in any weather. My husband and I go on 6-day horseback camping trips into the backcountry, and this is the best rain gear we've found in 14 years of riding.

What is the rating of this jacket in terms of its weather resistance? I live in Alabama, where the temperature rarely drops below the mid-thirties. Is the weight of this jacket sufficient to keep me warm?

This jacket only has a mesh lining and isn't designed to keep you warm. Look at the 101441 if you like this style of jacket but want a little more warmth.

I live in Honolulu, Hawaii, and I'm looking for a good rain jacket. However, even when it rains, it's still hot and muggy. Is everything going to be fine?

This jacket is fantastic - I absolutely adore it. I've never had a true rain jacket in my life. The only criticism I have is that the hood is quite large and covers your eyes when in use. However, it is also excellent on hot, muggy rainy days.

Is there a drawstring at the bottom that can be adjusted?

Yes, there is an elastic cord that can be adjusted.

5/5

I purchased one of these eight years ago and have received nothing but positive feedback. It's something I wear at work as an industrial electrician and at home on cool or rainy days. I've worn it in misty rain and torrential downpours; it took 8 years for water to penetrate the outer layer, which is why I bought another one exactly like it. Hopefully, they will still be available in 8 years.

When it's not too cold outside, this is a great way to get 'wet
5/5

' It's not like the rubberized rain gear you see all the time; instead, it's more like a stiff cloth (though I've only worn it twice so far, so it could soften up). It's not bulky (because it's not insulated), so even though it's new and a little stiff, it moves pretty well. It was about 35 degrees outside and lightly raining when I wore it. When I bought it, one of my main concerns was keeping it dry. You can work in sub-zero temperatures if you stay dry. In relatively warm temperatures, getting wet can kill you. I needed the light rain to keep me outside, and I needed to sweat to get out. Although I was drenched and sweating profusely, I was never soaked. I'd do the same thing with a regular medium-weight jacket. This has been fantastic so far. It's possible that with more wear I'll find something I don't like, but for the time being, this is one of the best jackets I've ever owned.

This is my first time purchasing proper rain gear
5/5

Though I don't have much experience with good rain gear to compare it to, I can compare it to all of the thin nylon plastic coated jackets on the market. No, there isn't a comparison to be made. In comparison to this jacket, even the "good ones" fall short. In Maine, I work outside in all four seasons, rain or shine; while I used to enjoy getting wet, I now freeze to death and have a miserable day. So I made the decision that it was time to get dressed. This jacket isn't just for rainy days; it's tough and well-made enough to serve as a regular work coat (FYI, the Shoreline Bibs are the same). Though I have yet to wear it in 90 degree, 93% humidity Maine August, I put it and the bibs on and wore them for two hours doing normal things in my 70 I was never sweaty or hot. It has the feel of a thick, heavy jacket, and it is in terms of toughness, but weight does not equal insulation. A note on sizing: I usually wear a large, but I wanted this to work for four seasons, and I layer a lot in the winter. So I went with the XL because I figured I'd need the extra room. I've got plenty of room, to be sure. To summarize, order your normal size; you do not need to consider layering in your size selection. I'm tall with long arms; the sleeves are perfect if a tad too long; the body has a little too much extra room in the XL. I'm in my mid-twenties and weigh approximately 200 pounds. I'm 210 pounds and 6'1", so I think the Large would have been a good fit. br>br>I've worn it through two nine-hour rainy work days so far, one of which was an all-day, slow, dreary drizzle that no one enjoys. Jacket made a joke about it. br>On the second day, it rained all day and there was wind. The jacket laughed it off once more. br>br>The only slightly negative thing I've noticed, which isn't an issue for me but could be for some depending on what you're doing when you want to wear it, is that it's a bit short. The jacket adds some weight after being in the rain all day. The outer shell of the jacket absorbs water, which makes its way down the jacket and drips off; the heavier the rain, the heavier the jacket. Although this is an excellent way to make the jacket both rugged and waterproof, it does have two drawbacks: first, the weight may be an issue for some, and second, water draws heat away from your body. The more water in the jacket, the colder it becomes. Layering can be used to solve this problem, but it can be difficult to work in certain temperature ranges. But it wasn't until later in the day, when I was tired, that the cold became an issue for me. br>br>Now, let's talk about toughness. I am the senior crew person at a plant nursery where I work with trees, shrubs, and perennials. I spend my days wrestling root balls, climbing through bushes, scraping through trees, tromping through mud, and carrying everything from papers to concrete blocks to a daisy for Grandma. I work in an environment where there is a lot of heavy machinery and potentially dangerous machinery. Because I run, walk, bend, climb, jump, lift, pull, pick up, put down, and carry, and because the majority of my work is heavy, dirty, physical, wet, and demanding, all of my work gear is thoroughly tested. br>br>Order your regular jacket size and you will not be disappointed with your purchase. I don't regret a single penny I spent, even though I ordered a size too large.

That is a fantastic jacket
4/5

Okay so. To begin with, only 4 stars because the sleeves aren't long enough - The sleeves are more like those on a fitted dress shirt, and the length is the same. While neither are bad in any way, I was hoping for a coat that was a little longer, especially since we're wearing it for a special occasion. However, I believe the jacket's designers anticipated that people would wear longer or simply larger items beneath it. br>br>Leading into my second point, and why I think the jacket is so cool - the general fit I'm familiar with Carhartt sizing because I've bought their clothing before, and given that I'm 5"11ish/250 and "densely built," I have a hard time finding a good fit. My shoulder, chest, and upper back are usually my trouble spots. This isn't an issue with Carhartt clothing, however. In fact, an XL, which I purchased with this and the quick duck jacket, has enough room for a hoodie and, if it's really cold, another crewneck sweater or similar underneath the hoodie. br>br>Third, there's the coat's worth - Yes, it appears to be a lot at first, but I live in the lower Hudson Valley area of New York, where it gets cold, but not as cold as Buffalo, and it rains. As a result, this is ideal for the middle of the year. From autumn to the middle of winter In the spring, I'll get something a little lighter, as this jacket isn't exactly light, but it's also not quite midweight. It has a lot of weight behind it. br>br>In any case, this jacket is perfect for me and what I need it for, as well as where I live, and I highly recommend it, especially since Amazon sells and ships it, allowing you to return it if it isn't right for you.

Olive green with a hint of envy
5/5

I'd been looking for a true rain jacket that wouldn't let water through in a downpour but didn't make me look like I was about to go to work on a crab boat. My clothes should be comfortable to wear and not too tight or baggy. I also desired a jacket that could be worn to church, on a date, or while working in the barn. This coat is perfect for the occasion. I weigh 180 pounds and am 6'0" tall. In the winter, the medium has enough room for a sweatshirt layer but isn't too baggy over just a t-shirt. I bought the olive green color and I really like it. If you want, the hood can be taken off, and it's the right shape to cover your head completely while not covering your eyes. I've had it through several rainstorms with no signs of water seepage. The fabric is durable and will not easily rip or pick. I'm picky when it comes to jacket sleeve cuffs, but these are perfect. The slanted outer detail, as well as the internal elastic around the wrists, are both very appealing to me. This is the uninsulated version, but I intend to layer it as an outer shell this fall and winter. Several people have complimented me on how nice of a jacket I wore. This is a high-quality jacket that I would suggest to anyone.
