Questions & Answers

My boots arrived in the mail with a different logo than the ones I ordered? These boots have been in my closet for years. Is this a genuine label?

I served in the military for 21 years and only wore Bates boots due to their high quality. I bought a pair on Amazon, just like you did. Unlike the Bates I'm used to, the stitching on these boots unraveled after about 3 months and the soles became loose. I'm not sure if they're the real McCoy, but they're certainly a waste of time.

Are these able to withstand water?

Waterproofing is not an option. If you're looking for "waterproof" boots, get the GoreTex GX style.

Is the toe made of steel?

This is an ASTM F2413-rated Non Metallic Composite Toe. Thank you very much.

Is there any metal in the zipper?

Metal is used for the zipper pull. Plastic makes up the teeth of the zipper.

It's simple, but it's not comfortable
3/5

I like the zipper on the boots, and they look nice. It is extremely easy to put on and remove. When the boots get muddy, it's great to be able to quickly remove them. It also makes cleaning them a breeze. The laces have held up well and are easy to tie. The tread performs admirably in mud, water, grass, concrete, asphalt, and other similar conditions, and it sheds mud well. In harsh conditions, the boots have performed admirably for their price range. They are not resistant to water. Not that I expected them to be, but I wanted to remind anyone who might be interested. They are not very comfortable, which is why I gave them three stars. They're fine for a short day, but I prefer my Wolverines ($180) or Keens ($170) for longer days. The arch support is inadequate, and there is no cushion. For short days, I recommend these. I also like to keep them near the front door so I can quickly put them on. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, skip these boots and spend a little more. They're fantastic if you're riding in the truck or operating heavy machinery.

The Side Zipper is a disaster
3/5

This boot's zipper is a disaster. I opened the box, took the boot out, and tried to pull the zipper down, but it wouldn't come down! The zipper did not pull down smoothly. The zipper had to be lowered by adjusting the boot itself. I can only imagine how much worse it would have been if the boot had been on. It was returned in its original box without being tried on. Aside from the zipper, the boot seemed to be well-made. However, it is almost certain to fail.

My socks are thin enough that I can put them on fairly easily without them clinging to my feet
4/5

After a few years of wearing the premium versions, I decided to go back to the first series that started my boot collection. My only complaint is that they're a little difficult to get into, but it's possible that they didn't intend for you to leave them laced the entire time; my socks are thin enough that I can put them on without them clinging to my toes. br>br>I'm not sure if it's a Bates thing, but I always have to either add another insole (on top of the built-in) or replace the existing insoles with two layers of insoles. Right now, I'm using a "work wear" type gel insole as my base layer and a memory foam top insole as my top layer, and it seems to be the best combination; I don't get really sore feet at the end of the day with this setup. I have thin feet, so that's most likely a factor in my case.

It appears to be satisfactory
4/5

There can't be a side zipper on a tactical boot, so these aren't tactical boots. br>I'm old and stiff, so I walk the dog in the woods in boots, and these look great for that, with the side zipper making them practical for me. br>br>I just received this and will update as I learn more, but these appear to be very good boots. br>They are much lighter than I am used to, so I am not sure how durable they will be, but the lighter weight will be a huge benefit if they hold up. br>On both boots, there is a "sloppy" seam on the left side of the younger. However, it appears to be sturdy and functional, as there is no rubbing. br>The soles appeal to me. br>They have good grip and aren't the knobby kind that wears out quickly on hard surfaces. br>Of course, only time will tell. In almost any situation, they should provide adequate traction. br>br>The leather appears to be of good quality, and the fabric appears to be durable. br>br>I removed the insoles and replaced them with custom orthotic inserts for medical reasons, so I cannot comment on the support as it is. br>They appear to be quite cushy and are as good as any in this price range, if not better than most. br>You could try over-the-counter orthotics, but first try the stock ones. br>The zipper appears to be strong. I'm not sure why, but these boots are much easier for me to put on than most other side zip boots I've tried. br>If they hold up, these are a solid 4 and I'm picky about boots. br>br>They stuff paper in the boot to protect it during shipping, which is great, but the person packing these boots stuffed a lot of paper in very tightly, and it took me a good 10 minutes to pull the paper out of the right boot. br> br>That's all there is to it so far. br>I find these to be on par with a pair of "original" Vietnam Era Jungle boots in terms of walking comfort and are much easier to put on. The sizing appears to be accurate and consistent. I usually wear a 12 in boots, and these are a 12 as well, so order your usual size.

Solid and relaxing
4/5

This is the fourth pair I've owned over the years. I wear them to work (machine shop) on a daily basis, as well as frequently outside of work. They last a couple of years for me. I do purchase $10 gel inserts and use them. They not only add comfort, but they also take up some extra space, allowing them to fit me perfectly. br>The combination of shoe strings and a side zipper is one of my favorites. The string is responsible for ensuring that the fit is correct. You can put them on and take them off quickly thanks to the zipper; )br>Every six months or so, I apply lame skin oil to the boots. It protects the leather from water and keeps it moisturized. These are the boots I wear in the winter. If they start to look a little worn, I'll brush them with black shoe polish. After that, they look almost brand new. I get 2 points for that little effort. Each pair has a three-year lifespan.
