Bates Men's 11" Paratrooper Side Zip Boot

It took some work, but I'm in love with them now. The following is what I meant when I said it took some time. The moment I laid eyes on these boots, I instantly fell in love with them. Although they are a nice item, I knew I would have to walk in them for weeks to make them soft. The leather the boots are made of is very hard. I believe that is the nature of paratrooper style boots since they are more for show at this point than anything else. So, I decided to go to town on these bad boys and try to speed the process up so as not to kill my feet waiting for a break in. The main factor that made these leathers as soft as I wanted was adding neastfoot oil to them after they had dried for I would put on a coat at night and walk in them in the morning. Take them for a walk again in the morning, and anew at night when they have another coat on. With a few coats of oil and a few days, these boots are perfect for me. In addition to the oil treatments, I gave these a thorough cleaning, following which I gave them a hell of a polish. There's no other way to put a shine on them. My cop friends stop me at the ERs all the time to look at my shoes, then the conversation turns to how to shine shoes. I use parade gloss on the tips and back, and black polish everywhere else. I get people asking me about these all the time. It's also true that many nurses love them, despite what you may think. The thing is, I believe they like shiny things and are easily distracted. Maybe they just like someone who looks clean cut and well-groomed. It might be possible. There is not much to be said about the standards in EMS appearance today, because they have essentially perishing. I think it's cooler to look like a slob and give that impression. It doesn't matter what you look like to me. This is fine, since a rare medic will certainly catch the eye when he walks in looking sharp. Along with being on your game and knowing your stuff, being on your game is definitely a good place to start. The boots are in very good condition, with only a small dry crack across the patent leather. The seller was honest and up front. Though it may be slightly thinner than previous models, the leather feels suppler, and more durable, so I don't expect it to crack as easily as previous versions, especially if we condition it well.

Materials are good, but the construction is poor. The problem is that it is not fixed immediately. The snap on one of the snaps broke because it was set incorrectly, and the snap on the other should last a week or so. I do not think it will last a year because some of the stitching is not that good. It's kind of ridiculous how the zipper is covered by a flap. The muscle flex that the snaps feel is enough to pop them open when you walk for a few seconds. It will take me only a few seconds to cut off the flaps. Unless I had a need for an 11", I would return these, but in the context of my situation, I cannot see anything else decent. The boots can probably serve as a good pair of boots if you're okay with making your own modifications. It would be better to look for an 8" tactical boot rather than these if you will be wearing boots frequently.

On the left, there is a pair of 3-year-olds. Since the beginning of these shoes, I have worn them at least 5 days a week, every week, for I have never owned a pair of boots like this. My Bates hats will remain with me for the rest of my life. I highly recommend them.

The shorts fit perfectly and look great, but the snap flap will not secure because the snaps are not in the right location. As soon as I wore them a couple times the snap flap pulled through the snap on the inside. I used leather conditioner on them before wearing them and I am satisfied with the fit and how they break in but I am not happy with the fit and finish of them. These would be a good deal if they were $40 or less It would be understandable for me to spend $50 on shoes at a department store, but these shoes aren't so good. The problem was originally viewed as isolated, but after reading other reviews, it appears to be a common one. A little more reading of reviews would have helped me make a better buying decision.
