Yes, because 1) you must remove the old stem from the interior side of the rim, and 2) you must insert your new stem from the interior side, necessitating access to the interior space of the tire.br>br>I have a motorcycle, so I deflated and crushed the tire in the jaws of large, wooden, no-mar woodworker's clamps to gain access to the interior space of the tire. I can then reach inside to remove the old stem's base and insert the new, wetted stem, pulling it through with this tool. After installing the new stem, I release the clamps and use an air compressor to re-inflate the tire (with the valve core removed, of course). The tire bead should be seated. br>br>The old stem can be cut in half, but this leaves the fat end inside the tire; this tool is used to pull the rubber barb of the wetted, new stem through the rim hole.

The valve stem tool works well, the handle threads easily onto the valve stems and has a nice knurled grip, the core screwdriver performs as expected, and the kit includes everything you need to complete the job multiple times. For $10, you get everything. This is something I would recommend to any DIYer looking to replace their valve stems and/or cores.
I've only used this tool once, but it was simple to pull the valve stem into the rim, and the valve did not leak as a result. So far, the tool and valves have met my expectations.
