HIGHS: Budget price for a 12mm repair kit (there aren't many options in that size). Shouldered inserts are used instead of helicoils because they don't leak as much. LOWS: There are no written instructions. If you don't use special ultra high-strength inserts, they may back out. Threadlocker with a high temperature rating (I used Vibra-Tite rated at 2000 degrees). The drill size isn't written on the tap. I couldn't get the tap to start with a 31/64" hole, so I increased the size to 1/2", which resulted in a much looser fit than I desired. The threaded end of the closest size insert was a little too long, so it had to be ground down. I used a small amount of high-temp sealer near the top of the insert, and the end result was a repaired spark plug threading on a 1200 Sportster with no leakage, so I'll give it four stars.
Cutting new threads is fine, but you have to drill out the head to the point where the tap can start, so I had to pull the head to get it to work. It was, by the way, used on a stihl chainsaw.
I tried the back tap tool. . . it's not bad, but the plug won't "sit" properly. . . I used this instead. HUZZAH! br>Don't forget to use thread lock on the outside of the insert;.
It's not Time Sert quality, but it got the job done for a fraction of the cost. Make sure to get the tread locker to keep the insert in place!.
It was a little thinner than the common brand, but it saved my 2013 Dart 1 from losing its head. 4 turbo. With patience, it worked like a charm. To remove metal chips, remember to use grease with the tap and clean every 1/4 turn or so.
This item performs wonders.
Thanks.
