An air leak is present in the head

Both were leaking air when I bought them as a set of 2. The siphons operated as a pump, but they failed as a siphon because too much air leakage in the head caused the vacuum to break, causing a stoppage of flow. It obviously did not make sense for me to pump out two 50 gallon barrels because I was draining them for cleaning. My solution was to disassemble the head and unscrew the pump bellows so that they would work. require a seal that is both air and water tight, are just polyethylene molded into a shape that did not The threads were then taped with Teflon tape, after which the head was reassembled. Furthermore, the discharge hose was removed and I wrapped some Teflon tape around the port where it connects before reconnecting it. Both places will need plenty of tape, so don't be stingy. There is also a chance for air to enter at the point where the suction pipe attaches. I therefore applied hot melt adhesive there as well. I did these things, and the siphons worked nicely and held the vacuum well enough to empty a barrel once I did them.

It took a while for my pump to arrive, but the pumps are fantastic. This product seems like it will hold up for infrequent emergency use on, but not when abused for long periods in an outbreak of zombies.
