How Our Score Is Calculated

Product Description

Compression tests are used to detect damaged pistons, worn rings, blown head gaskets, and other issues.
This tool stands out in terms of quality and durability thanks to its properly rated fuel hose and brass fittings.
The side-release valve allows for multiple tests to be performed without having to disconnect the hose.
For long reach spark plug applications, includes a 15-inch rubber hose with stainless steel casing, a 14mm long reach adapter, and 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 18mm adapters.
2-1/2-inch dial face with dual-calibrated and color-coded scales is large and easy to read.

Questions & Answers

Is it compatible with lawnmower and weedeater engines?

If you use a shaft adaptor, I believe you can. Because the hose adaptor's volume is too small for my 550cc motorcycle, I have to use the shaft adaptor to get lower readings. The problem with using this compression tester with a weedeater or mower is that you'll need help. Because the shaft has a rubber nozzle, you must press the compression tester against your spark hole and hold it there. It will be difficult to test and pull start your engines unless you have electric start.

Will the tester work on a Yamaha xs1100 from 1979 in Boha? Either 150318 or 5. 2 engine?

The tool's adapters allow it to be used on either the 1979 Yamaha or the 1984 Dodge's threaded spark plug holes. However, there is still the issue of access. Because the XS11's access to the sparkplugs is limited, feeding the compression tester's business end into the sparkplug holes may require some dexterity.

What exactly is the purpose of the metal pipe? Is there such a thing as an extension adapter?

It's used to simply hold the tester in place in the spark plug hole without the need for flex line or an adapter. If you have easy access to the plugs, this is a good solution. Consider the engine in a lawnmower.

With a few quirks, this is a great tester
4/5

I don't have another gauge to compare it to, but the compression numbers I got on my test run this afternoon were pretty close to what I expected. With the exception of one cylinder, which makes up approximately 65% of the others. I had considered renting a similar meter in my area, but it had received poor reviews due to its inaccuracy. br>br>However, I had to deduct one star because of this. If I had the option, I would have given this 312 stars because the instructions for using the solid extension were far too ambiguous. Is it just supposed to be held in place in the spark plug hole because it only has a rubber tip and no threads? I was able to use the hose's threaded attachment for the spark plug holes, but I struggled to keep the adapter screwed on. Because the 14mm threads fit perfectly, I decided to do the compression test without the adapter. br>br>However, it was the gauge itself that fell short for me. The needle was past the "0" mark and the pointer half of the needle was slightly inclined for some reason. With a plastic scraper, I was able to remove the meter's front face (which was steel and pressed on tightly). I straightened the pointer and reattached the front face after lifting the needle back to the right side of the post, and it worked for me. Aside from that minor snag, everything is well-made and durable.

I used this compression tester on my car just a few days ago, and it's a great tool for the price
5/5

I'd never done a compression test before, but it seemed straightforward enough, so I watched a few videos and got to work. It was simple to install and connect this tester to my vehicle. The gauge is simple to read, and the hose appears to be in good condition. It has a pressure release valve, which made switching from one cylinder to the next a breeze. However, making sure it was securely fastened was a little awkward. You twist the tube, but only the braided outer part moves, while the inner tube remains stationary. To read the pressure at first crank or if it isn't holding pressure, you'll need help from another person or a camera. It was too short to lean against the windshield and read while driving. br>br>Overview: br>br> It's a simple compression tester that does the job.
Pros: br>Easy to read gaugebr>Easy to usebr>Extra fittingsbr>Pressure release valve for quick and safe disconnect Unless you're doing it with a friend, you'll need a camera to set the pressure at the start of the crank. br>The steel braid feels like it might break early on, but I don't think the pressure tube will break. br>br>Conclusion: br>br> It was money well spent on a reliable piece of gear. With this, I was able to perform a cursory engine health check, which should help me diagnose any future issues.

The carrying / storage case is well-designed
4/5

The tool works well and can fit into small spaces. The only way to tighten the fitting that screws into the spark plug hole in some tight spaces is to apply torque to the flexible braided hose. While the braided hose is strong enough to hold the fitting in place, I'm curious how many tightening and loosening cycles the hose can withstand before the flexible steel weakens and ruptures. br>br>A well-designed carrying / storage case (not included) would add to the value of the item.

Gauge accuracy is poor, and the construction is low-quality
3/5

The gauge is extremely unreliable. I thought I was having issues with each motor until I compared them to two different gauges that were known to be accurate. If you're looking for an accurate gauge, stay away from this one because it was reading 100 psi while the other gauges on the same engine were consistently reading 150 psi. br>br>While the tester appears to be of high quality in the pictures on the internet, it is made of a low-cost steel mesh that easily distorts and snags.

I was able to accomplish my goals
4/5

It was used to check compression in my son's small-block Chevy. None of the fittings fit his sockets, so I just used the straight fitting with the rubber end and pressed it into the sockets while he turned the engine; it worked fine, but the fitting punched through the rubber end about halfway through, and now it won't stay on. It's not a huge deal because I can probably just super-glue it together. Also, the face is covered by a plastic piece, not glass, so glue it on the fitting and you'll be fine. I accidentally poked my finger through that one about 5 minutes into the job, but it still works. A glass face, thicker rubber, and a carrying case would improve this kit, but it met my needs and I'm satisfied.

This is something that every shade tree mechanic should have, even if they only use it once or twice every few years, because checking compression on a non-running engine is one of the first steps
5/5

Believe me when I say that I had a Triumph engine that I did everything except check the compression on. With an unknown non-starting engine that had extremely low compression, this should have been the first thing I checked. br>Nice build! I got it because of the metal hose, but I'm thinking about switching to rubber (the metal could scratch your valve cover if the spark plugs are buried deep). I've heard of the attachments on other sets coming off and getting stuck in the head, which would be bad, just like the brass fittings. This unit, on the other hand, hasn't had any such issues. Get a set because it includes various sizes of fittings and you won't have to buy them separately later. It was installed on a Triumph Daytona 600 from 2004.
