Does what it's supposed to do, but the extension doesn't do anything

Initially, I used this on an SOHC engine in which the extension tube was not required, and it worked perfectly. It read horribly low pressure even when the engine ran just fine on a DOHC engine with the spark plug holes recessed deep between the cams. I pondered this for a while and realized what the problem is - the plug holes are too far apart. Among the many features of the flexible hose is a check valve that allows air pressure to build up in the hose when it is not compressed. You can gauge the peak cylinder pressure swiftly when you screw it into the head, and you are able to quickly pressurize the hose to that point. In this case, however, the check valve is no longer close to the head, and you are effectively adding all the fluid in the extension tube to the cylinder, resulting in a lower compression ratio, and an inability to measure the compression to any degree close to what actually exists. Therefore, you might want to skip the extension tube and get the version that doesn't include one, which will cost less. You should make sure that the extension has its own check valve at the bottom if you need one for a DOHC engine.

Adapts well to changing conditions

Several months ago my Chevy van was exhibiting engine misfires, so I purchased this tester to troubleshoot the problem. We have found that the gauge is highly reliable, and its relief valve does not leak. i don't think it would be possible to make a mistake If you use a leak down tester you will get a more complete analysis, but you will spend at least twice as much money and this is much simpler for the average motorhead. It's a must to have some type of compression tester in your toolbox, and this one does the job nicely!.
