It wasn't a full rebuild kit, but it was enough for me to ensure that my freshly painted steering box didn't leak all over the place. It was a lot of fun to get the input seal off.
For use with power steering.
A leaking steering box input shaft seal is a common problem on vintage cars, and the most common fix appears to be to purchase a new or rebuilt unit, which can cost anywhere from $100 to $500. This is a fantastic workaround that I found to be effective. In my 1965 El Camino, I replaced the seal and used Lucas power steering fluid Stop Leak as a precaution. Part of the problem, I believe, stems from the use of new thin power steering fluids. Automatic transmission fluid was used back in the day, but the Lucas works just as well. I took the box out of the car to work on it because it was easier. The old seal was removed with a windshield trim removal hook tool, and the new seal was installed with a socket and hammer. Before inserting the seal, make sure it is completely saturated with fluid.
It fit my Saginaw 800 quick ratio steering box perfectly. There are no issues. My box was an AGR that I purchased as part of a power steering upgrade for my 1967 Camaro. It leaked at the input shaft, and this kit came with all of the necessary parts to repair it.
No more leaks in my power steering box now that it's been properly sealed.
There was nothing I didn't like about it, and it saved me from having to buy a full rebuild kit.
On a new gearbox, I was able to save over a hundred dollars.
