The dip switch should be set to the 8 cylinder setting. A white wire should be attached to the GM HEI coil (next to the pink wire).

The tight space in which I needed a tachometer was quite difficult to find. This one is fortunately what I found. My wish list includes a few things that I wish I could change, but they aren't drastic. This is *br_*br_- There needs to be a little more thickness in the wiring. For HVAC, the wire is thinner than that used for thermostats. If not thinner, it would probably be 24 gauge. This is *br_*br_- In my search for a tachometer I wasn't looking for one with an output that went higher than 10, maybe 6 or 7. Some beggars will not be able to choose what they are going to eat. In the event these guys ever release one of these with a 6k or 8k Tach, I'd want to buy This is *br_*br_- In addition to liking 270' sweep tachometers, I don't like the conventional 45' clocking angle on the tachometer, as this is at 90° from the horizontal.
It is very inaccurate, I'm able to guess the RPM closer with my finger. The settings have been tried on multiple computers. There is a mismatch between what it should be set to and what it is when set to 8 for an 8 cylinder engine. The needle is quite jumpy, as well. Spend your money elsewhere. It looks nice, but it's not worth your money. A UPDATED VERSION I spent another $15 on the gauge signal filter, as recommended by the service. Tach still reads way too high. Calmed some of the erratic movement, so that should calm things down. I purchased an AutoMeter unit that plugs in the same wires and it works just fine.
It matches the results of my scan as far as the RPMs are concerned. Although it is driven by a stepper motor, it is extremely smooth. Since August, I have had the Tach Its on my 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. I was able to wire in very easily. This was made possible with the use of an autometer tach adapter. Don't let the poor reviews deter you. It's an awesome product. Directions are just not understood by many people.

Yesterday I installed this, it was easy except for the wires not being long enough, so I had to use some speaker wire to make them longer. I have observed that the tachometer is sturdy and accurate, but it's so small that it's difficult to glance at it to see how many rpms you are at. In addition, it seems like the red backlighting on the device is always on, which is a little concerning, since it acts as a parasitic drain If this is because of an installation problem, I don't know what to do. It would be better to just buy one of those tachometers Remove the old cluster and replace it with the new The cluster will be tached. It is easier to read and looks better.
Driving at night is made easier with the Dim feature. I am impressed that it is still so easy to see during the day.

I have used them in several projects and found them to be very effective.
