Questions & Answers
No, it was a tight fit that required some "convincing," but it worked. While I was putting the ring on, someone pressed on the top of the fuel pump, which may have relieved some of the ring's pressure.
First and foremost, you make no mention of the vehicle's make, model, or year. This lock ring, on the other hand, was supposed to fit my Chevy Silverado 2500HD from 2002. I say it was supposed to because I couldn't get the lock ring to sit properly no matter how hard I pounded on it. Finally, I gave up and cleaned and repurposed an old one.
Duramax, I believe, is an exception. Autozone was my go-to. To cross-reference, type com into the address bar.
Steel was the material of my tank. I'm not sure if it will work with plastic.

It took longer than expected for the part to arrive. I had to scramble to find a replacement source for a scheduled pickup. Also, if you use the tilted bed method on your own like I did, if you can't get the new fuel pump gasket on, just reuse the rubber gasket from the old one. Otherwise, you won't have enough leverage to hammer it back into a locked position in a confined space.
Although it arrived two days after the fuel pump, it is of good quality and is simple to install.
Note: Try turning it over if the reviews say it's difficult or impossible to install. It's not going to work if you try to put it on backwards! I'm not going to tell you how I know this.
When I was replacing the fuel pump on a friend's 2003 Silverado, I came across this. The original was rusted to the point where it was nearly impossible to remove and came apart in two pieces. This was an exact replacement, and because it was OEM, I knew I could trust it. If you're doing a fuel pump, I highly recommend ordering this because you'll most likely need it (at least if you're salty/rusted like me).
This fit like a factory unit in place of the rusted ring and gasket. Unless you pull the fuel pump fuse and start it to remove the pressure, you'll need to disconnect the pressurized gas lines (easy no tools). Use a non-abrasive cleaner to clean the surface. To remove flaky rust, use a ferrous (brass) brush and blow it off with compressed air; DO NOT use a brush that could cause a spark or static electricity. To avoid getting rust into the tank, push the plastic finger and loosen the ring with a brass drift punch. Blow off flaking rust with a brass drift punch. Take off the old and replace it with new.
The original has been replaced perfectly. If you're going to replace your fuel pump, save yourself the trouble and potential downtime by ordering the lock ring with it. Even if your old ring is still functional, it'll almost certainly be rusted and corroded, making it difficult to reuse. It's a no-brainer; simply replace it.
The features and dimensions of this retaining ring are identical to those of the original OEM retaining ring. I used the original gasket (the kit does not include one). The only reason I gave it a four instead of a five is because I believe a retaining ring should include a gasket. I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to get the truck running again if my gasket had been damaged.
the same as new- BUT! Before you place an order, take a look at yours. Please double-check that the part you're using is the right one!! This one stated that it was compatible with my vehicle, but it was not. br>Mine is of the SNAP RING variety (also available here) (TR9?). )br>br>this TR14 appeared to be what most people had, but it wasn't mine; it was difficult to tell at first due to the rust on my tank/ring. br>br>just a heads up! I'd like to save people the trouble of having to return items or not having the correct parts when they're ready to complete a project.
So far, the only complaint I have about this item is that it is not genuine OEM. There are two posts on the OEM that will assist you in turning it on. This does say to screw in two bolts, but when you have the tank down and rip open this package to discover you need two bolts to make life easier, that's a bummer.
