Questions & Answers

Is it possible that this will prevent routine maintenance from taking place? (ie. (for example, an oil change plug, a transmission fluid plug, and so on)?

No, it will only prevent access to the catalytic converter and downstream o2 sensor and wiring in the area under the front of the passenger compartment. All fluid access will be through the engine compartment.

The cat security plate was still attached to the car when they stole my converter
3/5

They threw away their undersized aluminum pop rivets and went to Amazon to get the following: 1) POP Rivet 18-inch br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>b Stainless Steel - 8 Stainless Steel - 4 1/4" x 1/4" Gap (0. 125" x 0. 125" x 0. 125" x 0. 125" 062- 250) Qty- 2) 1/4" x 5/8" OD Stainless EPDM Washers, (100 pc) Neoprene Backed, Choose Size ($12)br>3) 1/4" x 5/8" OD Stainless EPDM Washers, (100 pc) Neoprene Backed, Choose Size Bolt Dropper quantifies the quantity. ($8)br>3) Astro Pneumatic Tool 1423 1/4" Heavy Duty 13" Hand Riveter ($28)br>br>I installed the car's three front-end bolts and two self-starting screws. Because they drilled 1/4" holes in the plate and you should use rivets the same size as the hole, I tossed out the undersized aluminum pop rivets they provided. To prevent rattle, all remaining holes were riveted with 1/4" SS rivets and rubber lined washers (as suggested by PriusChat). You'll need to raise the car enough to fit the over 13" long gun, as well as your drill and 1/4" bit, underneath it. Using jack stands and a hydraulic jack, I was able to accomplish this. When using these 1/4" SS rivets with the 13" pop rivet gun, the pull required isn't too bad in your living room, but it was all I could do under a car. To assist me, I had to rely on my legs. I was pondering whether I should have invested in an air-driven rivet gun, but I managed to complete the task. They were quick to remove the undersized aluminum rivets they provided. I'm hoping to keep my new converter because it would take an hour to drill out these 1/4" SS rivets. UPDATE; They stole my converter again today, despite the fact that the "Cat Security" plate was still attached and unharmed. They cut the exhaust pipe at the Cat plate's edge and somehow managed to remove the entire portion of the exhaust that was covered by the plate (see photo). Unless the car is lifted and the Cat plate is removed, I won't know if the exhaust bolts were removed or the pipe was simply broken off. At the very least, it appears that my thief has figured out how to get around the Cat Security plate completely. The robbery took place in broad daylight in a high school teachers parking lot next to a shopping mall, which was visible from a busy street. With the exception of a small area where their saw collided with an edge, there was no damage to the security plate. All of the rivets that secure the plate to the car are still in place (I replaced the included aluminum rivets with Stainless Steel rivets). This plate is obviously in need of a re-design. design.

Car overheats as a result of this! After my catalytic converter was stolen, I decided that this would be a good solution
3/5

I bought it and had it installed by my mechanic. The car overheated the first time it was driven on the highway. I took the car to the mechanic, who said there was nothing wrong with it. I drove away after he removed the cat shield. It didn't get too hot. The car overheated on the freeway, so I had him install it over and over. I had it removed again, and now I want to go back, but they say the window for returning has passed. It's taken this long for me to realize there's a problem. Can you imagine how much money I've spent having it put on and taken off, only to have it put on and taken off again? To put it mildly, I'm furious.

Is it the right size and thickness? No, I do not believe that is true
3/5

After installing this aluminum plate on my Prius, I felt a little more confident, but not quite enough. Installing the security plate is simple if you know how to use a power drill and have the necessary equipment to safely lift your car at least 24 inches off the ground. You must ensure that getting under the car is completely safe. br>I had my catalytic converter stolen, and I wanted to make sure it never happened again. br>The positive: br>The plate is simple to install, looks good, and according to my smog inspector, the Cat Security plate should not interfere with a smog check. br>The not-so-great: br>The plate is clearly just a deterrent, but it appears to be too short; they could have added 5 inches to the back of the car. It does not appear to be adequate. After the catalytic converter, there is room for a cut. After installing it, I felt a little better, but not quite confident. br>I went to Home Depot and bought some metal, then added another 6 inches of aluminum, using screws that go in but don't come out. br>At this point, I'm able to unwind a bit more. I know it won't be a two-minute job to remove my catalytic converter, and if they try, they'll be there for a long time with a loud alarm blaring. br>This security plate appears to be superior to other steel rope-based options, but it is a little short; I would have given it 5 stars if it were at least 5 inches longer.

This is a great piece of equipment! We needed a way to help secure our Prius after the cat on it was stolen
5/5

Insurance advised us to construct a garage for the car (a garage would be prohibitively expensive given our location on a steep slope). One of the officers who arrived stated that cables and plates were available to help secure the unit. I placed an order for this device and had it installed by our mechanic. Drilling out the rivets and undoing the security screws will be required if the cat is to be stolen.

Excellent defense
4/5

The muffler on my kids' prius was stolen. In California, the cost of repair was estimated to be $3500! I've got two more prius cars in the garage. On my 2007 Prius, it was simple to install. I went to Home Depot and purchased a variety of screws. On previous attempts to install the screws/rivets, I had stripped or damaged them. Each screw/rivet should have been supplied in multiples by the company.

My catalytic converter was stolen twice in five months from my 2008 Toyota Prius, which is a great product so far at a great price
5/5

I came across this solution and decided to try it. Because I am mechanically inclined, I installed the Cat security system by myself. It was a breeze to put together. I followed the installation instructions exactly as written, and they were very clear and easy to understand. It only took me about an hour to complete the installation, and I was pleased with the results. I haven't heard any new noises or noticed a drop in gas mileage. I've had it on for more than a month and my catalytic converter is still functional. Yay! *knocks on wood* I'm sure some thief has looked under my car since I put it there and decided it wasn't worth the effort or risk. This is a good deterrent, but it isn't a foolproof method of keeping your cat safe. Someone could still steal it, just like any other lock, if they tried hard enough. I would recommend this product to all Prius owners, especially given the recent increase in vehicle thefts.
