My local shop estimated that replacing the catalytic converter in my 11-year-old car would cost around $2200. Instead, I spent about $500 on Amazon for all of the parts and had Hubby and his friend put it all together in one afternoon. My check engine light hasn't turned back on in over a year.
At the same time, I bought a Walker Resonator (53720) and a Walker Quiet Flow muffler (54698), which I installed in my garage and required some mechanical knowledge. "Jack Stands" should be used. It took me 4 hours to complete, and I am not a mechanic. Now that the car sounds like new, make sure to use new gaskets, clamps, and other parts.
I bought the car used and had no idea it was registered in California. Buying this instead of the original equipment saved you at least $1000.
My 2005 Pontiac Vibe no longer has the P0420 code, and the unit is well built. It was put in by my mechanic. Is the city of New York carb-friendly?.
So far, no check engine light has come on, and everything has lined up and fit properly.
Fix good. It was necessary to weld it into place.
It was exactly what I needed, and it was $300 less expensive than the next cheapest shop.
