There is no need for a sealant because the two metals will form their own bond.
I bought the set last year to replace the failed Ford ones, and it's what I'd call melling. They seal right to the block and self-adjust to chain tension a year later with no issues. It's money well spent. Aftermarket parts from Melling are excellent. If you're working on your 5's timing, take a look at their oil pump replacements. 4 and 3 valves!
These are a new replacement for the original plastic ones, though they are not necessarily a new design. I always order Melling parts because these cast iron tensioners are by far the best. These tensioners, as well as the Melling m360 oil pump, should be on your shopping list.

Instead of the flimsy plastic OEM version on my 2005 Ford Expedition, I used this. It worked perfectly! There is no longer any need to be concerned about check engine lights arising as a result of this failing because there is no gasket to fail. It simply connects metals.
These were purchased to replace the plastic ones that came with a new crate motor. br>It turns out that the new motor came with these already installed, so I guess I'll have a spare set if I ever need them.
I purchased these to replace my OEM tensioners on my 2005 Ford F150, but I was able to find a dealer who would sell me the pair for not much more than I paid for this single one. It's identical to the other one I purchased, which fits perfectly and performs far better than the cheap plastic versions.
4L 3V. Amazing! A must-have for anyone working in the timing industry!.
After tearing into the dreaded triton for the third time, it's still going strong. While you're in there, make sure to clean out the pickup tube and replace it with a Melling high-volume oil pump.
Much better than the rubber gaskets on the OEM plastic tensioners. In October 2016, I had to do my timing, and the OEM tensioners on my car broke down in April 2018. I ordered these because they ratchet out rather than being pushed out of the way by the chain, which allows the chain to slip.
MELLING IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MISS.
This product is by far the best on the market, even better than OEM, in my opinion. Melling guarantees all of their products. Don't scrimp on tensioners; spend a little more now and save money later.
