I got hot while I was out in the sun

The temperature is too high! It wasn't actually installed by me. After plugging it in I noticed that it reached 300 degrees within a minute. It would reach an extremely high temperature in this system, so I would not install it on my oil pan.

A heater similar to this one was bought for my oil pan as well. It's surprising how fast these heaters heat, I had to turn the heater on last winter when it was -25. With wind chill, it feels like 60 degrees. As soon as I try this product on my battery, I'll let you know how it goes.

I used 3 zip ties to hold the pad on to my Rotax 912 ULS dry sump engine, which has a cylindrical external oil tank that makes heating oil easier.
