It's ideal for replacing your old air conditioning gasket. I bought two to deal with some roof deformation caused by a failed gasket. Here's how to do it: br>br> br>br>Make certain the air conditioner is turned off. Remove the interior control cover first. br> It's usually a combination of philips head screws on the outside and two small retaining bolts on the inside (less than 10 minutes). br>br>Now you'll need to remove four extremely long bolts. I'd recommend using a ratchet or a drill with a socket adapter for this task. (5 minutes)br>br>Drop the interior tray with care. It's fine to leave it hanging by the power cord at this point, but do so with extreme caution. The metal tray's edges are jagged and razor-sharp. There will be blood if you hit your head against a corner. br>br>Now it's time to climb to the top of the building. Some people recommend removing the AC shroud, but you can just lift the entire unit out if you're careful. It's nice to have someone there to assist you, but it's not necessary. I slid the air conditioner to the side slowly. (10- 15 minutes)br>br>Now comes the most unpleasant part of the project: cleaning the roof. Remove the gasket slowly and carefully. If you have an EPDM / rubber roof, be extra cautious. If you pull too hard, your roofing material may tear. No thanks. br>br>Remove any remaining gasket material from the AC unit as well. It could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete this process. Because of the sagging in my roof around the AC unit, I filled the gap between the ceiling and the roof with 2x4 shims. The surrounding surface was lifted as a result of this. After that, I stacked two gaskets and applied a bead of lap sealant to the base. If your roof is in good shape, this is usually not necessary. br>br>Now, carefully align the AC unit with the 14x14 opening and replace the AC unit (10 minutes). br>br> This was the start of my nightmare. I was 1/8 inch short of being able to thread the four long retaining bolts back into place when I went to do so. Why? Because of the shims and the use of two gaskets. So. very. close. I tried a new approach after an hour. To help compress the gaskets, I carried heavy items up to the RV and placed them on top of it. This worked in the end, but it was a stupid decision on my part not to think about it. The gaskets are surprisingly stiff and have very little give. br>br>So far, no signs of further leaking have appeared. Crossing my fingers!.
This is the original high-density product, which performed flawlessly. You'll have to put in some effort to get rid of the old gasket. The tape/glue that comes with it sticks really well to the A/C unit, and scraping and solvent were needed to get the old stuff off. If you put in the effort to properly remove the old gasket, the new gasket will adhere to the A/C unit perfectly. Don't scrimp on your work or you'll end up with leakage issues (which isn't why you ordered this in the first place?). ) If you have a rotten roof, this will not solve what has already become a major problem that you have been ignoring. This is ideal for replacing a leaking seal before your roof begins to rot.
I'm sorry I didn't replace it sooner. br>It worked great. br>There were no more leaks. br>I'm sorry I didn't replace it sooner.
Our truck camper's A/C was no longer leaking as a result of this. The previous one lasted 20 years, so this isn't a job that needs to be done frequently. I did it all by myself and didn't need any assistance moving the air conditioner around.
This item was included in the purchase of a Dometic air conditioner. Now I'm stuck with a $30 part that I won't be able to return.
It made my husband very happy. It was an excellent fit for our camper.
The gasket is made of thick foam. I purchased two others locally from different manufacturers and returned them, keeping this one. The only issue was that the mailman crammed it into an insufficiently sized box and folded the gasket; To get it flat enough to be installed, I had to lay it flat for a couple of weeks with weights on it. Despite this, the glue on the corners held up well.
Camco products are more expensive, but they are of higher quality.
